Always amazing, lots of variety

Been going for years, one of few places that have a full on Christmas menu every year. The menu changes every so often but love the aranchini and the sushi. Mains are usually good too as well as the soup. Cosy vibe and good cocktails and a treat to visit the spa.

Pros: Different , Fair price , Fresh

Lived up to the hype!

I was so excited to eat at Gistihúsið because of the raving reviews and it did not disappoint! Unfortunately I was not hungry enough for the full 5 courses so I only ordered the curry coconut soup and the crispy rice balls. Both were absolutely wonderful!

Coconut Curry Soup: I genuinely could have drank this from a glass. It was so incredibly flavorful that I was sad when I had eaten the full bowl. I wanted more! After every few bites I would say, “This is so good.” “I can’t get over this soup.” “I love this soup.”

Crispy Rice Balls: the rice balls were on the small side but but very rich so I don’t know that I could have eaten them if they were bigger or more of them. They ended up being the right amount and size. The cheese was so creamy and rich that I had to check back and make sure they were actually vegan.

There were plenty of vegan option to choose from and all were very clearly marked on the menu. Our server was wonderful and while the kitchen was a little slow, it was a lovely restaurant so we didn’t mind.

Would love go give more stars

I was so excited for the vegan 5 courses menu. It was disappointing. First of all, services was not very nice, it was rushed and they also forgot our dessert and we had to tell them.
As a starter you get some free bread which is nice. The crispy rice balls are amazing but since it‘s a sharing menu, they should bring 4 insteed of 3 balls. The sauce for the balls was already cold.
As second course you get a salat in a glas. Was difficult to eat from that glas. It was just nuts, vegan feta and beetroot. Tastes like nothing and not delicious.
The soup was okay. Very very spicy but you get some bread for it.
The main course was a shame. It tasted like cardboard. There were way too much peep in it.
The dessert was okay, just a cream with strawberries.
From a fine dine I expect more. There was no fresh vegetables in it. No taste explosion. And that for a price like 112€. Never again. I only give two stars because there is a vegan option.

Really good food

A bit of a fancy food place, but not like a super fancy feeling in the restaurant! It was nice! The menu depends on when you go there, breakfast, lunch or dinner. I was there for lunch.
The nut burger was decent!
The passion cheesecake was out of this world, I was so surprised! Truly amazing!!
So I can imagine the dinner menu is well worth a try too!

Fine dining

Vegan fine dining options (with prices to match!). In addition to the three and five course menues, there is also one vegan main course. It was a nut roast with barley, cauliflower shavings, beetroot and pesto, and very tasty.

Pros: Fine vegan dining in rural Iceland

Cons: Expensive , Small servings

5 course vegan meal

We had the 5 course vegan meal (minimum 2 people) and enjoyed it. Our courses included am avocado hummus, roasted celeriac, a curry coconut soup, a nut steak, and a passionfruit cheesecake. They also brought bread and butter to start, although we asked the server and he said the butter was not vegan, so be aware. I think it was around $50 US per person, which was reasonable as far as Iceland goes. Everything was presented well and had good flavor. My favorite was the soup --it was excellent.

Great vegan options!

After a long drive from Hofn, with all vegan options listed on Happy Cow closed, so thrilled to find a vegan option at our hotel, especially as a non-burger/pizza option in Iceland. The black bean steak was quite filling (and delicious). A delicious salad and crispy avocado slices completed the meal.
There was a vegan desert too but I was too full (and they didn't have ice cream, including the vegan ones available.

Reservations were required when we visits in June so plan ahead!

Pros: Vegan tasting menu
