cute location + Detroit style pizza

Emmy Squared is a chain of pizza restaurants that serves Detroit style pizza. This location is in Old Town Alexandria, located on a pedestrian-only section of the street. The location is very nice, with many shopping and strolling opportunities nearby. They have outdoor seating with some heating, so you can sit outside even in the colder months (though you’ll still want a jacket).

The main vegan option is the make-your-own pizza, with vegan cheese and a choice of toppings, including jalapeños, red onions, pineapple, caramelized onions, banana peppers, bell peppers, mushrooms, and basil.

Note that you can only get the regular size pizza, not the large! This is stated on the menu. Our waiter explained it’s because the restaurant uses vegetable oil in the regular sized pans, but butter in the large sized pans.

You can also get the cheesy garlic sticks with vegan cheese. Our waiter said the pesto in them is vegan.

The disappointing part is that there is an upcharge for vegan cheese and each topping being an extra fee, so the pizza can get pretty expensive. But unfortunately this is not uncommon, and at the end of the day the pizza is tasty. It’s also difficult to find deep dish or Detroit style pizza around here, so this restaurant is fun to go to on occasion.
