Helpful wait staff, good tamales

The waitress was helpful in answering questions about the menu. There is no longer a separate plant-based menu but the regular menu does label items as plant-based or vegetarian.
They were out of the jackfruit taquitos but the plantbased tamales were great. The "frijoles charro" are the vegan beans, and the white rice is the vegan rice option.

Yummy Taquitos

I got the plant-based jackfruit Taquitos at El Charro and they were delicious. This was my first time eating here but I want to come back and try the hemp tamales. Very friendly staff.

Pros: Friendly staff, Good location, Good food

Cons: Rice and beans were okay

Several vegan options for meals & sides

So many choices - vegan burritos, tacos, tamales

Pros: Vegan burrito was flavorful and filling, Side of cilantro lime rice was tasty , Side of vegan prepared pinto beans was good too!

Manager tried to convince me that chicken stock is vegetarian

Just as a heads up to vegetarian friends out there....

Despite being labeled "vegetarian" (both in name and being coded with a "v" on their menu) the "vegetarian enchiladas" come with rice that is made with chicken stock. Additionally, the staff, including the manager, have an unclear understanding of what a vegetarian is. The manager tried to convince me that chicken broth was not made from animal.

I contacted the owner and, to his credit, he tried to remedy the situation. However, when I turned down his offer to a phone call, he requested that I "be human." I suppose he was afraid of nastygrams online, but I only want to make sure that people who care about what they eat are in the loop. Seems unfair otherwise. And, I hear they have wonderful food for omnivores.

Anyway, this is the second time this happened to me at El Charro and I've eaten their chicken based rice once before, having been told that it was vegetarian. I won't be going to any of their locations, including the new plant based one, Charro Vida, that just opened up on the NW side. I ate there once and loved it, but I just don't feel good about giving them my business anymore.

Pros: "vegan" menu

Cons: unclear on what vegetarians eat, chicken stock in rice, untrained wait staff

A great Tucson spot!

Always enjoy my experiences here. I definitely recommend the jalapeño avocado tacos! 4 stars just because they aren’t fully vegan. :)

Pros: Clearly marked vegan options, Great environment

Cons: Few options

A Tucson Fave!

I’m surprised there aren’t more reviews on this place (as well as some other Tucson listings). This is a famous 100 year old restaurant that is wildly popular - yet has chosen to feature some very thoughtful vegan offerings. They are front and center on the menu and are delicious. We’re visiting from Chicago and really enjoyed the all vegan entrees and vegan stuffed mushrooms.

Pros: Great vegan options, Fresh and delicious. , Chimichanga was invented here.

Cons: Downtown location is cooler.
