Adorable spot, came here twice

When I found this place, I hadn't noticed it on HappyCow for some reason, so had been planning to add it myself because I was so impressed.... only to find that it was here after all! This is an adorable outdoor restaurant with a mostly-vegetarian menu and a lot of good vegan options. It's a no-frills type place (their full name includes a small caveat that translates to "not gourmet food") but everything is really tasty. More than that, the vibe here is incredible. It was a great mix of locals and tourists, and it definitely attracted a politically-aware and savvy group of people, likely due to its location in a feminist and antifascist bookstore. I got to eavesdrop on a conversation where about 15 young people from a collective of some sort were getting to know each other, and several of its members were explaining veganism to the other members of the group, who were really receptive. The place just had a great welcoming vibe, not just for vegans, but for anyone who was open and tolerant.

And the food was good! As promised it was pretty low-frills but it was tasty and the portions were huge. The first night I ordered enfrijoladas which were excellent. The second night I got enchiladas which were good but I admit I wish they'd had vegan cheese. There are a lot of options for appetizers and dessert as well.

One of my favorite places in Merida!

Wonderful place to for vegan and non vegan friends

This cafe has the cutest chill vibe. The food is good but sometimes lacks flavor so ask for salt. I love coming here with my non vegan friends as we all have options. Has a great beer selection, best I've seen at a cafe here. Cafe runs consistent hours unlike many cafes in Merida which clothes on random days and hours.

Update: Since my first review the Cafe has removed some of the vegan options which were the ones that were high in protein like the vegan fajitas. The vegan options now are a bit boring and bland and contain very little vegan protein.

Pros: Nice vegan tomato soup, Great garden for dinning, English speaking staff

Cons: Sometimes food is bland, Vegan options lack protein

Cool location

This place is worth going just to see it. We went around breakfast time. The pink piña was the perfect morning drink and the enchiladas were delicious.

Nice atmosphere, disappointing food.

The enchiladas lacked flavour and our mushroom mole tasted bitter/burnt. Good vegan options on paper but need executing better as the food was quite bland which was a shame.

Pros: A good amount of vegan options , Nice atmosphere , Friendly staff

Cons: The vegan food we ordered was pretty tasteless , Some of the food tasted bitter/burnt , Overall pretty disappointing

Imaginative, modern and hip

El Apapacho is a really fantastic spot in Mérida: they have many vegetarian and vegan options, serve water for free (!) and have an amazing variation of feminist books. The waiters were incredibly nice and fast.

Pros: Free Water, Bookstore, Good Food for a fair price

Best food in town

There aren't many vegan restaurants in Mérida, many are already closed. So we tried El Apapacho with 'vegan options'. Best decision ever! Wonderful fresh food, nice courtyard and staff.

Meal size is good, we had a misunderstanding and ordered 4 dishes for two people 😅

They're also offering Mexican wine and Beer.

Try this restaurant!😄

Pros: Fantastic food, Fair prices , Staff speaks english/spanish

Cons: Not directly in the City center

Lots of flavours and big portions.

The mushroom mole was a flavour explosion. I wanted to try cactus too I ordered Nopales Rellenos. It stuffed with mashed potato. served with salsa verde. Authentic mexican flavours.
The wine was great and the staff was very helpful and spoke very good english as the menu is in spanish only. Recommended.

I wanted to lick my plate

We were a little on the edge about coming here after reading reviews, however our entire party agreed it was an excellent choice. Is the food exceptionally creative? No, but the authentic dishes did not disappoint and the flavors and presentation were on point. I absolutely loved my Mexican Soya (soy protein) Fajitas and my partner (who’s a bit of a mole expert) said the Soya Mole will have a special place in her heart. Our omnivore friends also enjoyed their plates

Over half the menu is vegan and all vegan dishes have the option to be made vegetarian by adding appropriate dairy products.

They also serve a variety of alcoholic and non-alcoholic beverages — we really enjoyed the Jamaica!

Pros: Tasty authentic Mexican cuisine w vegan twist, Clearly labeled vegan and vegetarian options, Unique vegan desserts

Cons: Only outdoor and semi outdoor seating, They had bug spray on the table, but we had no issues with mosquitos

Nice place and food but service not great

The place has a nice vibe to it and it's lovely to sit in their outdoor backyard area. We also liked the food and they have several vegan options which are clearly labeled on the menu.

Unfortunately the staff was a bit cold and we didn't feel as welcome as we often feel at other restaurants. Also they overcharged us a small amount and when we mentioned it politely the staff basically ignored it and didn't take it off the bill.

Deliciosas enchiladas

Lovely place!

I absolutely love El Apapacho; I have been here twice in 4 days specifically for the mole. It is exceptionally amazing! I could eat it all day. There are plenty of Vegan options as everything that’s listed vegetarian can easily be made Vegan - let them know.
The garden space outside is super cute and welcoming and in the baño, if you need, there are feminine products which I thought was super nice of them.
The staff is so friendly. There is a huge book selection, a clothing rack, where I bought a really nice and decently priced dress as well as really good natural soaps and other products.
This is a must visit place for sure and definitely have something with mole on it, you won’t regret it.

Pros: Amazing mole, Awesome garden space , Friendly staff; great products to buy

Cons: It’s not a completely Vegan restaurant
