FIVE STARS! gluten free/nut free restaurant with vegan options

The service was great, the food was AMAZING! When I looked at menu online, I thought it would just be subbing black beans and sweet potatoes for meat, but the tamales are world class and they made several of the tamale options with black bean filling. There’s also an amazing butter bean hummus and (of course) salad with a few options for vegan dressing. The server asked us up front if we had any dietary restrictions or allergies which is awesome because my son has food allergies and it’s always awkward when the waitstaff doesn’t have any idea what you’re talking about. This place is a HIDDEN GEM!

Pros: Real options (not just leave out meat), Vegan salad dressings, The server asked us up front re: dietary needs

Local and fun

Besides the food, my favorite part about this place was its atmosphere, which was somewhat surprising and refreshing considering it's in a stripmall off the Pelham Parkway. We went early evening on a Friday and it was not yet crowded. The scene felt relaxed and the staff was very friendly. As tall folk, we enjoyed swinging our feet, sitting at one of the high tables. The black bean tamales are clearly made in-house and there are a variety of sauces to add to them. There are also four (4!) vegan sides, and a couple vegan appetizers, such as mashed yams and tangy coleslaw. The fried pickles were very well-made - noticeably crafted, not rushed. Great, unique margarita too!

Pros: Nice atmosphere, Great vegan options, In the middle of non-vegan-ville

Really good!

Fully vegan meals available at no extra cost. Would rate 5 stars but the app is weird.

Pros: Lots of vegan options.

Cons: It's a bit expensive. Pretty much $9 min per meal.

LOCATION HAS CHANGED

3569 Pelham Parkway Ste 1 and, 2, Pelham, AL 35124

I sincerely love delta blues! The owner has celiac disease, so the entire business is gluten free! The vegan option is black bean tamales, with several different toppings. My favorite is the holy chipotle, the corn relish is OMG good! Definitely a must try.

A Vegan Gem in Birmingham

Delta Blues Hot Tamales is one of the most vegan-friendly restaurants in Birmingham. Their menu is clearly marked with a wealth of vegan options, everything from tamales to sides and desserts.
The atmosphere is cozy and casual, with friendly servers. The service can be a little on the slow side, but if you tell them you're on a limited lunch break they'll be sure to check on you more frequently.
As an appetizer we ordered the fried pickles. They were fresh, crunchy, and served with a spicy cream sauce.
For the entree, I got the buffalo tamale plate "vegan style" which includes black bean tamales topped with buffalo sauce, vegan ranch, tomatoes, and lettuce. It was spicy, creamy, and extremely filling. My side of tangy slaw was equal parts sweet and sour, perfect for counteracting the rich tamales.

Pros: Almost everything can be made vegan, Friendly servers, Beautiful outdoor patio

Cons: Service can be a little slow

Best vegan food in the south!

This is by far the best vegan food I've found down south, especially in Birmingham. We ordered a little bit of everything - tacos, fried pickles, and plenty of tamales. It was all phenomenal, and according to the owner, virtually all of their sauces and dressings are vegan (including the ranch).

The owner gave us a rundown on their history and served us personally. He even went as far as offering brewery suggestions and setting us up with some local hot sauce for the road.

Pros: Huge Vegan Offering, Really Cool Atmosphere, Great Drink Menu

Cons: Small Parking

Friendly, comfortable restaurant

My favorite restaurant in Birmingham hands down. There is no need to make special requests or switches, just ask for the vegan option of dishes on the menu. There is a different fruit cobbler every day and it is always vegan (and delicious!).

It is clear that the owners and employees care for the safety and health for their guests and pride themselves on their food allergen safety protocols. This also ensures us vegans that there is a very very small chance our food is cross contaminated with animal products.

The Butterbean Hummus and Holy Chipotle tamales are my personal favorite with a side of sweet potato mash or slaw.

Pros: Friendly, knowledgeable wait staff, Clearly listed vegan menu options

Awesome food

This place has really, really great food and lots of vegan options. I had the Holy Chipotle black beans tamale plate. The chipotle-lime sauce was so good. I had two side dishes: sweet potato mash and tangy slaw. And blueberry cobbler for dessert. Everything was delicious. Great service to boot.

Pros: Vegan options, Dine inside or on patio , Easy parking

First of all...

...the fried dill pickles were the bomb. I got the chipotle style vegan black bean tamales and it was like a flavor explosion happened in my mouth. 💯

Would go back

We order to go food and I was impressed with the options there were in the vegan category. I love fried dill pickles and haven't had them since going vegan nearly 10 years ago. They have great fried dill pickles. The tamales were too spicy for me to handle but my husband LOVED them. We also ordered some vegan sides which were all good.

Pros: Lots of vegan options

Cons: VERY spicy

Great spicy tamales!

My fiancé and I lived in Mississippi for a few years so I was really excited to see this place and we had to check it out. I had the black bean tamales bbq style. They were delicious and spicy. If you don’t like spicy food, beware because these do have a kick. We also ordered the hummus and fried pickles. The hummus was not very good and the chips tastes like they had been fried in old oil. The fried pickles were good but I’ve had better and they didn’t come with enough of the comeback sauce. Really cool environment, nice sized patio area. Seems like a cool place to have a couple beers. Only took away one star for the hummus appetizer being not very good.

Pros: Vegan options

Cons: Hummus appetizer bad

Down South cooking

This place has a large parking lot and ok outdoor seating. Feels very shabby as far as decor goes and the tables and chairs feel very cheap. The menu is small but has many vegan options, and the staff knows what is and isn't vegan. Serving sizes are nice and the food was good - I got the classic delta tamales. Prices are very reasonable

Pros: Good parking, Nice staff, Good size portions

Cons: Shabby decor, Gets hot when full, Slow service when busy
