We had dinner here 3 days ago. We think it wasn't value for money. My husband had tomatosoup, nothing special, for 6,50E. After that, he also ordered mushrooms with the potato: there was absolutely no salt added and otherwise tasteless. It costed about 17E!. The salad was potato, carrot and mayonaise, the warm groceries consisted of green beans and undercooked carrots. I had a menu, 25E, consiting of tasteless pumpkinsoup without pumpkin, a parsnip pie, with noting else than parsnip in it, mashed potato with nuts and a tomato / bell pepper sauce and ice cream, with hardly any sugar added. The parsnip pie and the potato tasted like cardboard. People around us were complaining about the taste too.
Besides of the food, the table wasn't clean with crumbles form other guests and there were some dead flies lying on the window sill. Our advise: when planning to go to a restaurant in Zutphen, do not eat here, it is a waist of money.
This is one of the few vegetarian hotels in Holland. The name of the hotel is Berkhotel De Kloostertuin. A beautiful location. With a restaurant of course. Its about a year ago that I was here, so I don't remember much details. What I do know, is that we had a very pleasant stay. It's a bit old fashioned, in a positive way.
The food in the restaurant was good. Stylish and a bit expensive. We booked two nights and two diners, so the price was nice. Zutphen is a beautiful city by the way.
I have to admit this was one of the poorest eating experiences I have ever had. My girlfriend was served an undercooked Portobello - dry and spongy - as her starter. Mine consisted of three small slices of bread, each the size of a large coin with a dollop of some over zesty mix to spread on them. It was a starter, but €7 for 3 small slices of bread is a little hard to comprehend.
Then the main dishes were served, and these were both very disappointing. The prices were quite high (€17 - €21) and my girlfriends place consisted of two skewers of unseasoned mushrooms and a baked potato! For myself, I received a plate of a dry pasta, with dry pastry with some of the zesty pesto sauce from my previous plate! There were salads involved served as side dishes, but shredded lettuce and cabbage is not quite my idea of a salad from this level of restaurant.
The pasta was so dry, something had to be said, and the response from the chef was about as jaw dropping as the prices they were asking for such a dismal meal - its supposed to be dry!! I did not recall the menu mentioning 'a dry pasta'.
Then desert came. We were wondering how anyone could manage to ruin a desert? But a vegetarian restaurant serving a cheese cake with a thick layer of gelatin (glycerin) on the top makes you think if these people really know what they are doing? It was too much and we decided not to even stay for coffee.
The food was very bad, and the response to our criticism was even worst. We were obviously very unsatisfied customers and we were treated as if we had been in the wrong. I have read other reviews about this restaurant (in Dutch) and they have also mentioned the pasta being incredibly dry. We have offered our criticism to the restaurant, and they wish to do nothing about it but makes us pay for a terrible evening.
It was not all bad though... the waitresses were pleasant enough! But, that is not enough for me to recommend this restaurant to anybody.
