A gem in a vegan food desert - Edit
CO is a real gem. Fantastic wait staff who make a gazillion trips up and down the stairs each night yet remain cheerful, attentive and responsive. The decor is sparse, modern yet warm and comfortable, offering a variety of seating from large tables with benches to small tables with chairs.
Read moreThe food is perfectly executed and represents a modern interpretation that carefully preserves-and respects- traditional Vietnamese flavors and textures.
In particular, we appreciated the separate Vegan menu, which had a great list of options. We tried all the small dishes (tofu buns with crispy tofu, pickled cucumber and carrots, cilantro, crispy edamame; the spring roll with mixed vegetables, lettuce bed, ginger miso; and the lemongrass tofu spring roll with herbs, vermicelli, bean sprouts, peanut sauce). We then shared the yakisoba, which was made with rice noodles, tofu, cabbage, carrots, onion, zucchini, garlic, and sweet mirin soy sauce. Everything was excellent.
The have a very thoughtfully selected wine and beer list and a full bar with a variety of specialty drinks.
And they deservedly were awarded the best 2012 International Restaurant by the Charleston Food Bloggers (http://www.charlestonfoodbloggers.com/).
Pros: Vegan menu, Excellent food and service, Great ambience

Thanks for this great review. We went there based on your review, and; we were not disappointed! We ordered the lemongrass tofu spring rolls, the com chien and the yakisoba. All were excellent. I asked for hot sauce, and the waitress brought two house-made amazing sauces. We will definitely return on our next visit to Charleston!

No more spicy udon. 😭 But still good food. - Edit
I like that they have a dedicated vegan menu, but I’m really unhappy that that is not one warm entree. The spicy udon dish was always a fave, but now they have pretty much only sushi entrees. We tried two types, and they both tasted great.

Fresh & Spicy - Edit
Make sure to ask for vegan menu, the V’s on regular menu are just vegetarian. Food was very fresh and lots of subtle flavors. Spicy Udon Noodles were really spicy and delicious. Very happy with our meal.

Great for mixed group - Edit
I was the only vegan in the group, but everyone agreed that my Spicy Udon was the best dish! Everyone else were happy with their dishes too, but man oh man that Spicy Udon was worth the trip to dowtown.

The edamame gyoza was delicious. I wasn’t too impressed with the tofu curry, but my friends liked it. I’d eat here again.

Would only return for edamame spring rolls! - Edit
The place was not busy. We walked in and had 3 servers acknowledge us, telling us to sit anywhere, it was 12 minutes before they came to ask for drinks and another 16 before they came back with them. The drinks were very weak. (A short glass supposedly containing 3 shots.) That being said, they tasted very pleasant.
Read moreThe mango spring rolls were overpowered by the jalapeño and red pepper, but the dipping sauce was delicious.
The edamame spring rolls were the absolute star of this meal. I could have ordered another plate of them easily!
The spicy upon bowl was just that, very spicy, but balanced well with ingredients. Nothing super special though.
Upon ordering the noodle bowl, I asked for the VEGAN Spicy Noodle bowl, our server asked if we would like chicken or tofu. I asked excitedly, "oh, you have vegan chicken?" To which she replied "no, but its really good." Lack of server knowledge and unimpressive drinks are why I rated this as such.
Pros: Edamame spring rolls
Cons: Untrained staff, Inattentiveness, Drink prices

Terrible - Edit
Waited 30 minutes for a banh mi even though the restaurant was mostly empty. It was tiny and the bottom bread was literally dripping wet. It was totally flavorless as well, with unseasoned tofu and no sauce. The tofu was filled with what appeared to be grated ginger that had been rinsed and squeezed dry (no flavor). We also got mango rolls that had one tiny sliver of mango in them.

Very happy - Edit
I've recently started a plant based diet and most of my eating out has consisted of veggie burgers, Mediterranean, salads and Mexican. I'm on a solon trip to Charleston and came here based on the suggestion of this app and the reviews. I love spring rolls and I enjoyed the Edamame Spring Rolls (I wanted to try all the spring rolls). I also had the Spicy Udon without tofu and jalapenos. It was flavorful and filling. I can only do a little bit of spice and this was just right (minus the jalapenos). Very happy with my dinner.

Bland - Edit
It was nice there is a separate vegan menu. The staff was very nice. However, I ordered a number of things and they were all very bland. In addition, I asked for hoison sauce, which was very salty and found out it may have had fish sauce in it.

Vegan Date Spot! - Edit
We went for our anniversary dinner and had the best food! I ordered the Com Chien (tofu, fried rice, edamame, scallions, soy sauce, sesame oil) and my husband got the Spicy Udon (tofu, snow peas, bell peppers, white onions, scallions, carrots, celery, jalapeños, sweet mirin soy). Both dishes were delicious and fresh! We also really enjoyed the Tofu Summer Rolls. CO has a great happy hour for food and drinks. They have a separate vegan menu which made ordering simple.

Good dinner option in Charleston - Edit
Went here for dinner with omnivore friends and had a really nice meal. I asked for the vegan menu-not the most extensive, but a couple of options for appetizers and entrees, split spring rolls with a friend and got the udon noodle bowl. Both were good sized portions and I was definitely not hungry afterwards. Also very good cocktails! Everyone enjoyed their meals-would definitely come again.

Good options! - Edit
My boyfriend and I were in the city for two nights and came here our first night before a concert. We sat upstairs at one of the high tops. I had heard they had a separate vegan menu so I asked our server. She happily brought it over, turns out she is vegan also! How cool! (There are few vegan restaurants in the south so I assumed vegans were sparse as well) she was very nice nonetheless. We shared the edamame spring rolls, so good!! I had the spicy udon noodle dish, devoured! Even though, I prefer standard all vegan restaurants, it’s alwags nice to find a good non vegan place with good options for vegans that aren’t just a simple salad!

A cool spot in a great area, they have a good cocktail list and separate menus for vegan and gluten-free. I got the spicy udon noodles as recommended by the waitress; they came out pretty quickly and definitely did not disappoint.

Good vegan options - Edit
CO has a few locations & we visited the Savannah one a few years before this one in Charleston. Both have a very similar vegan menu with good choices!
Read moreFirst, make sure you ask for the separate vegan menu. It’s only by request and the actual menu does not have any vegan food listed.
I was a little bummed this located didn’t have the vegan sushi rolls that the Savannah location had.
Waiter was super friendly, answered questions about dishes (I don’t like spicy food), and super helpful.
My boyfriend got the spicy udon & I got the vegan fried rice. we also shared the vegan summer rolls. Everything was delicious, though they put WAAAAYYYYY too much cilantro in the summer rolls. (I was pulling out bunch after bunch of it). I normally look at fried rice as a side dish, not a meal, but it was super flavorful & really yummy. Had enough for lunch the next day, too.
Really good options, especially if dining with non-vegans.
Cons: Needs the vegan sushi!

Really enjoyed this spot! - Edit
I was drawn to this restaurant specifically because they had a vegan menu available. It is small, however, very few omni restaurants in Charleston even offer a distinction without requiring you bombard the servers & kitchen staff with questions. The restaurant is very small, but it has an upstairs that has been carefully designed to provide maximum seating in comfort. Communal tables offered a unique experience since all the 2 top tables were taken when we arrived. The staff was very friendly and service was prompt despite the fact they were very busy. I had the spicy udon, and it was a little oily, but VERY delicious! My husband is not veg, and he enjoyed his food very much also. I would definitely return here! Five stars if I could!

Very tasty Vietnamese food at CO! - Edit
I really quite enjoy eating at CO. I typically tend to order the com chien with fried tofu but I have also had the lemongrass tofu banh mi and the crispy edamame spring rolls before, all of which were good. I will say that I find the food to be a bit oily overall, so maybe not quite suitable for oil-free vegans. Very tasty though.

limited and bland - Edit
It's great they have a vegan menu but it's unfortunate that it's so boring. If you're going to have a vegan Vietnamese menu there should be more options than fried rice and noodles for a $14 entree, not many veggies, mainly tofu, some edamame, and rice.

We had a wonderful time here - great menu, great location. They have separate vegan and gluten free menus - there isn't a whole lot of overlap between the two, but there was at least one option that was both vegan and gluten free.
