Spoil yourself!

Cafe Bateel is a real treat - go to the one on Tahlia Street as it's the most exclusive venue and has a date shop to die for. Even if you don't like dates the displays are a treat for your eyes. Although main meal options are limited for vegans, their customer service is so outstanding that they try to accommodate every change you want; so don't be shy, ask away!

I went with some friends for brunch the other week and had the mezze platter: carrot and cumin hummus; beetroot hummus; olives; fresh pita bread; quinoa tabbouleh; baba ganoush . . and instead of the 2 cheese options I asked for mushrooms and asparagus. Everything was cooked and seasoned to perfection. They initially brought out creamy mushrooms and were so apologetic they gave me a vegan raspberry and chocolate torte on the house. I'm not a huge fan of cakes but every mouthful was a delicious assault on the senses!

I was so impressed I took my daughter along for lunch the week after. They had 4 vegan soup options; 3 salad options and, for main, Mushroom Carbonara with crispy porcini mushrooms, peas, spinach and a creamy cashew sauce - the Italians couldn't have done it better! They provided a bowl of a variety of fresh bread to start, which went well with the very elegant bottles of balsamic and olive oil. The balsamic had date syrup added which was a new and sensational twist on the original.

There were 2 vegan desserts available and my daughter went for the chocolate praline cake which, she assured me, was the best she'd tasted!

It is a little pricey, but you get what you pay for and what you get is gourmet standard food and gold standard service.

Pros: Gourmet style food, Outstanding customer service, Elegant, spacious, light and airy

Cons: A wee bit pricey (but worth it!)

Tasty but pricy

There are some vegan options but not many. All breakfasts have eggs or cheese or youghurt in it. Also a bit overpriced. My partner got an omlet for 57sar and it's very little portion for a man as a fully-fledged meal. Only good thing that they give extra bread.

Pros: Tasty

Cons: Overpriced

Good food

I expect very good things for the future from Cafe Bateel. As it is, they are one of a very small number of restaurants in Riyadh with a decent selection for Vegans.

Veganism is very new in Riyadh, so to find a restaurant that does vegan AND gluten-free is a dream come true for me.

The staff at Cafe Bateel are wonderful and will bend over backwards to meet your needs. The only thing is, they are new to Veganism and you need to check they understand everything when you order.

They do a selection of hearty soups and salads that are sufficient for main. Just ask for the cheese to be left out if it is listed on the dish. The main dish will be pasta or risotto. You can ask them to swap the mozzarella or parmigiana for black olives or maybe pine nuts. Between these things and the fresh mocktails, there is enough for you to be excited about the menu, which is a godsend after my experience at Tokyo restaurant last week (literally Tokyo had nothing, even the salad is soaked in fish sauce marinade )

I had an amazingly fresh quinoa tabbouleh, perfectly chilled and with pomegranate! Plus I had a spicy fusilli pasta with black lentils and cherry tomatoes which was very nice. For dessert, I had the only option available: dates (they were very nice) and a nice coffee with soy milk.

Next time, I’ll be trying a Mocktail or sparkling date drink (their speciality) and a risotto, plus I’ll try another salad.

I told them they need to add a vegan dessert. They said they only had their vegan options since a few months ago, so they are still learning.

If they add a vegan dessert, a main that is not pasta or salad, and ensure their already excellent staff are trained fully about Veganism, I’d give them 4 stars which is the maximum possible for a non-vegan restaurant.

As it is, I still recommend you go there. Just wrap up warm if you want to sit outside. The ambiance is wonderful but the wind is icy, despite the fire heaters! If you sit inside, insist on a table at the back, AWAY from the door. You can thank me later 

Pros: Decent selection for vegans who are gluten-free , Lovely staff, Wonderful ambiance outside

Cons: Wrap up warm if outside, or, sit away from the doo, Double check the staff understand you are vegan
