Putting The Ok In Bondok - Edit
Having happened upon some excellent Egyptian outlets in recent times, I was extremely keen to get the measure of this particular restaurant. Thanks to the commutative and informed staff, I was happily able to place a sizeable order, one that would allow me to satisfactorily ascertain whether or not I could add this restaurant to that prestigious list.
Read moreI started, as one should with these meals, with the staple of the cuisine: the falafels.
Both sets were soft, supple, and had an appearance that I had come to equate with some of the finest examples of this foodstuff I’ve had the pleasure of devouring – the auguries were good. Alas, no sooner had I begun than I was faced with the reality that not all was as it had initially promised to be – lacking in terms of taste, seasoning, and moisture, they were far from what I had anticipated. Incomprehensibly, the stuffed variety was drier than the standard version, which would be an admirable feat if it were not so disappointing.
Hoping for better, but now with diminished expectations, I moved on to the foul. Here at least I found flavour, especially with regard to the tahini-laced option, but I was still not overly enamoured by the textures.
The entirely credible lentil soup next provided me with more reasons to be cheerful, so looking to continue this upward trend, I sought refuge with the koshary. By far and away the best dish of the lot, it was everything that one would want this madcap creation to be. Its entanglement of carbs was liberally layered with crisp, perfectly fried vegetables, all of which was complemented beautifully by the tangy tomato sauce.
Riding a wave of positivity, I turned my attention to the sandwiches. Rather than being a rousing crescendo, this bread-based offering only served to once again muddy the waters. Some – such as the falafel and the mixed vegetable – were excellent; the rest, though, were middling. This isn’t to say they weren’t enjoyable; it’s just that they didn’t impress as much as I would have liked.
Relatively cheap, occasionally cheerful, I don’t feel as though there was enough in this meal to warrant another visit.
