My Go-To spot:friendly, fresh, delicious - Edit
Location: across from Sunroute Hotel on Kawaramachi-dori btw Matsubara-dori & Takatsuji-dori, easy walking distance from the river, from Gion subway station. There's an awning & sign, a menu chalkboard outside with the name in English. This place is easy to find!
Read moreAmbiance & menu: the cafe will please.vegans and omnivores alike . It is open for breakfast, lunch, snacks (8AM-7PM) & serves good organic coffee , tea, smoothies, vegan baked goods, sandwiches & free wifi.
We had the vegetarian lunch special (1000 yen) a generous and tasty serving of miso soup, green salad and soy nuggets, Carrot -walnut salad , kinpira, and pickled veggies. The atmosphere was welcoming, the service quick and the hosts and menu are bilingual. They absolutely understand vegan and vegetarian tastes and can adjust the menu.
This is my go -to place in downtown Kyoto.
Pros: Vegan options , Fresh innovative dishes, Moderate prices

Vegan options are clearly marked, but were fewer than I had hoped (why can't the toast and jam be made vegan?). Aside from the homemade granola, we tried all the vegan offerings:
Read more* Scone and muffin: the muffin stole the entire (breakfast) show. warm, delicious crispy top, moist on the inside
* Japanese breakfast: brown rice, soup, sweet potato, tofu, little pickled vegetables. Good value, tasty
* Salad: fresh but small
* Coffee: no espresso drinks, but they do cafe au laits. 200 yen off all drinks with breakfast

Great quiet lunch - Edit
We went there on a Thursday for lunch and it was empty. I had the salad set and thoroughly enjoyed it. What was extra nice was that the veggie options were pretty much all vegan, so no fish flakes in anything.

Horrible coffee - Edit
This was the worst soy latte I have ever had. Both the coffee and the milk were so burnt that I couldn't take more than a tiny sip and left the rest! The Japanese breakfast was okay, the soup was nice but I wouldn't go back for it.

Good breakfast - Edit
The coffee was really good. Vegetarian breakfast options are tasty. Tried the scone/muffin and the granola breakfast. You get 200 Yen discount on a drink when you buy a breakfast. So you end up with 700-900 Yen plus tax p.p. We would go again.

Aussie gets brekky fix in Japan! - Edit
Would rate 5 stars if I could! Breakfast, let alone a vegan breakfast, has been hard to find in Japan so I was so excited to find this place only a few doors down from our accomodation. Variety of vegan options available... I had a salad bowl, a granola bowl and a soy latte (didn’t need all of it tbh but being from australia, big breakfasts are our thing). Very well priced, cosy atmosphere, super friendly staff.

Vegan Breakfast - Edit
Went here for breakfast on Christmas day. It was a good start just a bit pricey. The scone was more like a Christmas cookie. Delicious anyway. The muffin was good too. Not my favourite since I'm more of a sweet tooth but nice nonetheless.
Read moreThe staff was friendly. Seating was a bit limited but it wasn't too busy. Not hard to find. Unfortunate that it serves meat dishes.

Vegan Brunch Options! - Edit
My partner and I went here for brunch and really enjoyed it! The staff were lovely and very eager to accommodate our vegan requests. We had the Japanese style lunch set, as well as the salad and scone set (all vegan), and although we didn't try it, the granola was vegan to. Everything was really nice. They also made me a really good earl grey tea soy latte!

One of my favorite places in Kyoto - Edit
I would give this five stars if I could but unfortunately they do serve meat.
Read moreI go every time I am in Kyoto. They serve breakfast as well, which not a lot of places do. It is just a really pleasant place to while away time. They have guidebooks about Kyoto you can read if you are visiting to plan what you would like to see. Most of the seats are indoor but I think they have one outdoor seat as well, which is lovely when the weather is good.
This time I got a curry that came with two tasty salads that arrived in small glasses, like shot glasses, a carrot/apple muffin, and two soy lattes. Everything was great. I wished there was more salad because I feel so salad deprived in winter in Japan...
If you only get one food item, go for a muffin! They are amazing and I have tried so many vegan muffin shops in Japan. These might be the best. They are light and fluffy, not heavy or gritty, and the center is almost molten with warm fruit. They are just the thing to have on a cold day.
Vegan food items are not marked on the menu so you need to ask the waitstaff as they serve vegan, vegetarian and omnivore food.
The staff member was competent and got the food out fast even though it looked like she was the only one working that day.
Pros: Amazing muffins, Relaxing atmosphere, Staff is competent and fast
Cons: Serves meat, Vegan items not marked on menu

best lunch in Kyoto! - Edit
The lunch set was so cheap and delicious, for 1000yen we had brown rice, miso soup, salad, tofu dish, savory balls, some vegetables and tofu fritters. The staff understood vegan and double checked everything! The soy chai was spicy and flavoursome. We will absolutely come back!
