Few Vegan Options - Edit
This is a popular place for non vegan sushi. When I asked about vegan sushi, they said that every veggie roll can be made vegan. However, I asked further and they have only one fryer for everything. If you don't want your food fried with non-vegan stuff, you are much more limited. I had the T-Pain sushi and it was great. They gave me extra mango and rice with that. The service was really nice, and the chefs were very friendly.

Few vegan options unless you remove ingredients - Edit
I came here the other day and was disappointed that there were only two vegan sushi rolls that are vegan. The other rolls can be made vegan by subtracting various tempura ingredients. I chose the Shiitake Crunch since it was one of the two options. It was delicious, but in the future I'd rather go to another sushi restaurant that offers multiple vegan options and miso soup that by default is vegan.

This is as good as it gets outside of a dedicated vegan and expertly crafted sushi menu. We tried four different items off the veggie roll menu, though a couple came standard vegetarian, and so required minor modifications to be made vegan. Servers were well aware of these modifications, so all that was required was to request that they be made vegan where appropriate.

If you’re looking for excellent plant based sushi, this is it.
Our only complaints were that it was extremely busy (though it’s easy to see why) and that since fish was still served on site, a sensitive nose will detect the smell and you will often see fish at the bar and on other peoples plates. It didn’t bother us too much, but fair warning.

Best Sushi Ever - Edit
My husband and I were on our mini honeymoon for the weekend and we specifically picked Santa Cruz because of all the vegan options we would have. We really only have one spot in our town that has great vegan sushi that’s not an after thought on the menu. Someone’s comment said it was better than vegan sushi in SF so we had to see for ourselves. They did not lie. My husband and I ordered 5 rolls and each one was great. We are thinking to come back again before we leave. Our server was vegan so they were very familiar with how to modify the couple rolls we had that weren’t vegan but make sure to ask. We had the Treetop, Ghost in a Shell, Veggie Gaia, T Pain and Silence of the Yams. My fav was the Veggie Gaia :)

Akira is awesome! They combine solid fundamentals with adventurous recipes. I've never been to a sushi place with more interesting vegan options.

The vegan sushi options here are incredible. This sushi is better than any other sushi I’ve had, which has been a lot (including many trips to Shizen in SF). I generally try to avoid non-vegan restaurants, but this one has the best vegan food in the county.

~20 vegan rolls - Edit
Absolutely blown away at the selection of rolls. I’ve been back over 10 times and this is the best vegan sushi I’ve had. Plus they usually have Humble Sea or Corrolitos beer on tap!
