It Sang To Me - Edit
This was a meal six years in the making. Having first laid eyes on one of their other bustling locations in Abu Dhabi when I arrived in the country, I promised myself I would endeavour to get there and see just what could warrant such popularity. Time passed, life happened and ultimately circumstances dictated that I wouldn’t ever quite achieve my goal. However, now here in Dubai, I was offered the opportunity to finally get a glimpse into their world, and I grasped at it with vigour.
Read moreWith such a protracted build-up, this could easily have been a somewhat anticlimactic affair, especially considering the amount of incredible Indian fare I have consumed in the intervening years. Yet no sooner had the meal begun than I realised I had little to fear.
The source of this panacea to my worries was the uthappam. Often average, though pleasant enough, this version not only had real bite and substance to it, but also a fabulous depth of flavour. It was an early indication that the reputation I had spent six years wondering about might well be justified.
From here on out, the standard remained elevated. The onion rava dosa was delicate in structure, yet robust in taste, the button idli were outrageously good for such a simple offering, and the chana masala was rich, creamy and expertly spiced.
There wasn’t a single dish that I could point to without having praise for it, though my favourite was definitely the samosa chole. Combining the best elements of a curry and chaat, it was beautifully balanced in both taste and texture, with the crisp samosa providing the perfect contrast to the rich, spiced chickpeas and accompanying sauces.
And so, after all that time, and failing to reach the original Abu Dhabi outpost, I finally got my answer. The popularity suddenly made perfect sense. What began as a long-standing culinary ambition has now become a rather more immediate desire to return, and I am certain it won’t take me the best part of a decade to seek out more from this evidently fantastic chain.
