18-4 Dafosi Dongjie, Beijing, China

Potential favourite restaurant?

19 Feb 2009

I visited this restaurant a couple of weeks ago and I have to say I was very impressed! I'm not usually a huge fan of mock meat, but the things they do here are incredibly tasty and different to the normal lumps of tofu "chicken". The "eel" is highly recommended. The place had a good atmosphere and very friendly staff who try their best to help you out.

One thing, it can be difficult to find, especially as the name "Still Thoughts" does not appear anywhere on or in the restaurant in English. There is a map to find it here:

Also we found it useful to get our hostel to ring and ask for directions. They wrote the address and directions in Mandarin for us which we then managed to find it by.

Look for the big green illuminated sign down an alley.

Great value typical Vietnamese

Really loved this place. It is very popular with the locals too - always a good sign. Does buffet style com plates including soup and free Vietnamese tea. You get a huge portion for 20,000VND, can be less depending on what you choose. Fake meat really tasty, especially chicken wings with lemon grass.

Also does all the usual noodle soup type dishes, cau lau,pho etc etc.

The lady that runs it is very friendly and smiley.

Not sure about this place really. It is ok. Staff friendly, cool place,a bit like a retro staff canteen, but we didn't think the food was up to much. One dish noodles were undercooked, another just tasted odd, too many ingredients, too much going on.

They do do really tasty snacks on the stall outside though. There are small bags of some squishy pink things dotted with pepper which come with bits of basil, no idea what they actually are, but it's maybe worth a trip just to try them.

14 Great Oak St, Llanidloes, Wales

Fantastic little shop

Sells a big range of certified organic veg as well as a selection of locally grown veg.

There's also really good (and reasonably prices) cheeses, wine, beer and cider, including my favourite - Dunkertons.

Well worth a visit!

Beautiful setting, tasty food, great people

21 Mar 2009

During our time in Hoi An we've become regulars at this place. The setting is amazing- a decked area looking out over the river, we've spent hours relaxing and enjoying watching the world go by.

The food is very tasty and healthy. There are meal options to suit every budget from 10,000d (less than a dollar)for traditional Vietnamese rice and veg meal to 250,000d for a huge tasty hot pot for 4 people. I'd really recommend opting for the big hot pot for a treat if there's a few of you, it's well worth it.

What really makes this place though is the owner and the staff. They are all very friendly, and chatting to Paul is always inspirational, he's a very interesting chap.

They also run boat tours and do kayak hire and snorkling.

Fantastic traditional Vietnamese food

21 Mar 2009

Great veggie restaurant just away from main centre of Hue. We got addicted to this place and went 3 times in a week! Good menu, with lots of amazing salads and veggie versions of traditional Vietnamese food. Ran by Buddhists, frequented by Monks, it's a very relaxing restaurant with a good atmosphere.

60 Nguyen Thai Hoc, Can Tho, Vietnam

Mega cheap, tasty Vietnamese

15 Apr 2009

Typical rice buffet style Vietnamese place, well known and popular with locals.

Very cheap, Com Dia is only 8000. They also do other things including fresh spring rolls (1500VND each!), different fruit snacks, sandwiches, pho etc etc.

One of the few places I've been in Vietnam where they didn't even think about ripping us off with tourist prices.

Would definitely go back if I visited the area again.
