A Happy Find
01 Sep 2012
I made a point of visiting this restaurant while attending a Conference in Indianapolis. It was a serendipitous find. The food was very good and the staff friendly. The staff were not aware of a "forks over knives" type of eating, but willingly modified a vegan dish to reduce the oil they typically used. I had lunch their and would have considered returning for another meal had my schedule allowed. Personally, I find this place more a lunch than dinner experience, but not having actually been there for dinner, I could be wrong.
Be aware Earth House is located in the back room (fellowship hall?) of a church building so it makes it easy to find on one hand, but may make you a bit hesitant to enter since it is a church. Go around to the side for the restaurant entrance. You won't be sorry.

A nice find in an unexpected place

I attended a conference at Nothern Kentucky University located here in Highland Heights and found this location on Happy Cow. I was so glad. I've eaten there twice now. The waitstaff were very helpful and since I'm also eating the Esselstyn food plan (Forks Over Knives) I not only found their vegan options a great start, they went further in providing them without oils from stir-frying. I found the servers friendly, the kitchen accomodating, the prices very reasonable and the food delicious. This is on my "must-do" list when back in this area. Yay!

I'm a very frequent traveler who lives in California but whose work takes me to much of the U.S. and occasionally overseas. I use Happy Cow to find places to eat and have very good experiences. This one was no different. Healthful Essence is a good vegan restaurant - a bit offbeat as almost all of them are and some might be put off by the location, but shouldn't be. It's off the beaten path, but worth the trip. Healthful Essence offers a range of both cooked and raw vegan entrees and sides. I had the curry ungoat over rice and peas. I asked for collard greens but was told they had kale instead on this occasion. That suited me just fine. The curry was not overly soupy - which I appreciated. The rice was sticky and tasty, balancing the curry ungoat. The kale was freshly cooked, not at all overdone (a frequent problem with "greens" especially in the South) and very tasty. The portions were generous and for this 3 course meal, my cost was $12.95 - a very fair price, especially in Atlanta. Thanks Healthful Essence for a great meal, and thanks Happy Cow for another great recommendation.

First, this is actually two places, both highly recommended by locals. There is Slate bakery/deli open during the day and a full restaurant/bar open for lunch/dinner. I was in Augusta, ME (10 minutes away) on business and ate at the restaurant on a very busy night. I had checked earlier in the day and been told a vegan meal would be no problem. I returned in the evening with a non-vegan co-worker. It was Saturday night before Halloween and the place was packed. We had no reservation but the host told us to wait if we didn't mind sitting at the bar where there is full menu service. He was about to seat a couple sitting there. We snagged those two seats and despite the place being packed, we were served quickly. When I explained I was vegan they suggested a couple of items on the menu the chef would slightly alter. I selected an item and was asked "Would you like tofu with that?" (This was not on option on the menu.) I was pleasantly surprised and agreed and was served a very good salad and entree. There are vegetarian but no specifically vegan items on the menu, but ask. They were more than willing to help and seemed used to such requests. I was impressed this was all done with a great attitude on a truly crazy night. (We were surrounded by a pack of "zombies" in the bar and a "zombie crawl" was headed down the street outside.) It was fun, the servers were very friendly, the food was delicious, and the whole atmosphere made me want to return when the place was calmer and I could get a table. Plus, this is the only actual restaurant currently listed on Happy Cow for the entire Augusta, ME area. I was referred here by vegan and non-vegan locals. I'll be back.
