More About Me

Reasons why I prefer to eat vegetarian or vegan:

I've always felt sick at the idea of eating an animal... ever since I was 4 and found out where meat came from. Over the years, as I learned more about the dairy industry and other such industries that exploit and torture animals, I realized being vegetarian wasn't enough. I've been vegan now for nearly nine years, and I am becoming more and more active in the animal rights movement.

I joined HappyCow Members Community because:

I recently moved to Japan and I am finding it surprisingly difficult to maintain my vegan health living here. I hope to find other vegans living in Japan, but I'm also just grateful to have this connection to like-minded people around the world. I have never sought out vegan camaraderie before, but I'm finding it more and more difficult to be surrounded by people who just don't get it. It's very frustrating to constantly be judged and told that I'm "too sensitive" or just plain "difficult" simply because I care.

Here are some places I've been that I liked... and places that I would like to visit one day:

I love Ireland... also not the easiest place to follow a vegan diet, but there are more resources in Dublin now than there used to be, and it is a stunningly beautiful country! I would like to visit every little place on Earth. I am especially interested in going to Africa (Ghana is my #1 destination, with Egypt a close 2nd).

Some of my favorite veg*n foods include:

Vegan Chocolate Chip Cookie Dough ice cream (by Temptation... based in Chi-town) Vegan Peanut Butter Fudge Pie (from The Uncheese Cookbook by Joanne Stepaniak---great book!) Every Vegan Dish at The Chicago Diner!!!! (If ever you visit Chi-town, it is a must: 3410 N Halsted!!!) The Chicago Diner Cookbook (can be ordered on their website: http://www.veggiediner.com/) Raw: The Uncookbook by Juliano (If you have the commitment to go raw, it's a must!)

Here are some books, movies, magazines, and my favorites that I would recommend to other HappyCow members:

The Uncheese Cookbook by Joanne Stepaniak Earthlings (documentary feat. Joaquin Phoenix) Diet for a Small Planet by Frances Moore Lappé (a good resource for answering many of those pesky questions so often posed to vegans and vegetarians) HIGHLY RECOMMEND: www.veganfreakradio.com !!!!

Hello, Jojove, I am Italian,I will spend one month around August 2010 in Ogaki, with my Japanese wife and my two children, and I need advice on "How can I eat vegetarian in Ogaki (gifu-ken)": any cheap restaurants offering vegetarian food? Because of medical reasons I cannot eat spicy-hot food,so I need to stay away from indian restaurants, and other sources of spicy-hot food temptations. Thank you for your advice. P.S. I am also interested in Protestant-Evangelical-Bornagain churches or fellowships in Ogaki and sorroundings, better if in English-Italian-French or even Portoguese, but better not of the "pentecostal-speaking in tongues" sort. Thank you for your advice.

Just wanted to say a quick hello because I should really be working right now and not chatting online! I only just stumbled across this website and am happy to find a fellow vegan in Japan :-)
