More About Me

Reasons why I prefer to eat vegetarian or vegan:

My wife had some health issues in 1990. She had to switch to a vegan diet, so my daughter and I became vegetarian to make it easier. So, each of us has kept to our vegan/vegetarian diets since then. I really love cheese, but otherwise am pretty much a vegan. We also only buy organic foods, and have a large organic garden. And, my wife is also gluten-free.

I joined HappyCow Members Community because:

It's good to hear from others about great restaurants, or recipe ideas, etc. I'm a bit of a joiner, and have joined groups for various interests that I have, including music, gardening, cigars, libertarian politics, etc. This is one of those interests.

Here are some places I've been that I liked... and places that I would like to visit one day:

I travel a lot, and I make food a big part of that. When going places, I try to plan my day based on which restaurants I want to visit. I've enjoyed great trips to New York, Seattle, Portland, San Francisco - all with great restaurants. Outside of the US I've been to several cities in Canada, Queensland, Australia, Israel, London,England, and several parts of France including Paris. I will be traveling to Singapore later this year. I've had great food in all of these places, and need to post more restaurant reviews!

Some of my favorite veg*n foods include:

I simply love mushrooms. Alone or in just about any dish. I'm writing this during the winter, so I've been eating a lot of soups recently - including borscht and split pea soup. Indian food is a favorite that I never tried before becoming vegetarian, and it's always hard to go wrong with Italian or Mexican food. Parsnips has always been one of my favorite vegetables, as have baby beets with their greens attached. Avocados are always great, and I've been really enjoying Persimmons lately.

Here are some books, movies, magazines, and my favorites that I would recommend to other HappyCow members:

I love Charles Dickens and Wilkie Collins and other English authors from the mid 19th century. I'm enjoying science fiction more and more. She's probably not popular here, but I love Ayn Rand's writing. The Lion in Winter is probably my favorite movie. Others include The Lives of Others, Lawrence of Arabia, Aurevoir Les Enfants, The Devil's Advocate, Casablanca, etc. For magazines, my favorite is Skeptic.
