Vegan Travel Suggestions Discussion Forum

Has anyone had this experience? It was the first time for me. I was reading the menu outside a very popular beachfront restaurant, and a maitre'd came up to me and asked if I'd like any help. I explained that I was looking to see if there was any vegan or vegetarian options, and she said with a big smile - "Yes!" and then told me they had a gluten free menu. Every dish on the menu had animal products, so I said that vegan meant nothing dead from an animal or related to an animal's body - no meat, dairy, eggs - so she repeated that they had a gluten free menu, and I repeated myself about being vegan!

Needless to say we didn't dine there. I had hoped that the difference between gluten free and vegan/vegetarian would be more commonplace in a high tourist area.
