Hello and Welcome to the new folks! :-)

It is really great that we first posters on this thread are all Vegan. Sadly I was not raised Vegan myself but I joined the party as soon as I got an invite! ;-)

Now I have been Vegan for about 21 years, since my early teens. I have 3 great kids who've all been Vegan since the start as their mother and I were both Vegan for several years before the kids were born.

I call Portland, Oregon (usa) home and love to meet other Vegans - so come visit soon! :-)

Brok: What a fun nickname you have! It's been great watching Veganism so rapidly become a much larger part of the culture in Israel over the last decade. I've heard that the falafel on Shenkin Street is the best around - do you agree?

Trinity: Thanks for helping welcome the new folks! I've been hearing wonderful things about Glastonbury for years - perhaps I'll be able to visit someday!

Teamair: It's always nice to meet folks who've been Vegan since birth. My kids are and the oldest is pretty close to your age now. :-)

Hi Everyone! I've been vegetarian since 2004 and more recently raw vegan since 2011 when I moved to beautiful, sunny Queensland to live with my partner who is a Raw Food Chef and Digestive Health Specialist. I've just set up a new FB page and blog on Blogger called "rawvegansover60" with the purpose of encouraging more mature members of this global world to rectify health problems and help heal the planet by choosing a plant-based lifestyle. I'll be sharing tips from this site with my followers :)

I'm starting to garden in raised beds so I can take advantage of the year-long growing season! I am here to connect with a like-minded community & to share recipes and more.

Hi Cascadian! That's so cool that you know about Israel. Actually, I'm not such a felafel lover. If you need to know about felafel I will ask my sons. To me, Sheinkin is great for amazing fresh juices, and the Orna V'Ella cafe which is vegan friendly. Veganism has had a huge surge in Israel, especially Tel Aviv in the last couple of years.

I hope to get to Portland someday! :)

    Hello and Welcome Martine Lisa!

Your region is on actually my short list of places to visit. I made it to Minneapolis last year but that was pretty much it for MN...

As the Iron Range & north-eastern MN doesn't have a lot of folks to start with, it looks like you may just have to work harder on recruiting folks to become veg*n!

Have you been in touch with any MN based veg*n groups? Even if they aren't active in your area, they are likely your best resources for finding folks who are. The Twin Cities VegFest folks or this meet-up group seem like good people to check in with, if you haven't already.

While they aren't in your state, the Northern Vegans group of U.P. Michigan *can* relate to being veg*n in small rural towns of the upper midwest!

Also, come visit us in the HappyCow chat room to you can connect with veg folks worldwide! :-)

Though not vegan or vegetarian yet, I plan to go vegan once I move into a place of my own in July. I really don't have a choice but to eat dairy and other products because I don't have money for food and all my mother (whom I currently live with) really buys is pizza, chocolate, potato chips, and soda. My choice to go vegan is more for health reasons than anything. I am sick a lot from the diet that I have little choice but to consume, and also am about 80 pounds (~36kg) overweight. I will likely stay on the diet as well once I get healthier.
I am starting a blog once I move called A Year of Vegan. I was planing on posting at least once or twice a week, if not daily, with health updates, food I made, etc. But like I mentioned, the vegan diet will likely turn into a life-long thing for me
    Sorry for the long rant.

Hi! I was a vegetarian for many years until a dairy allergy (NOT an intolerance!) put me in the ER. I have severe food allergies (as in having to carry two Epi-pens) to major food groups: Dairy, dairy by-products, eggs, seafood, and shellfish. So, by sheer default of my immune system, I eat vegan 99.9% of the time. I also have to source my prescription medications and vitamins so I don't suddenly drop dead from cross-contamination or undisclosed ingredients.

I'm also a grad student and am quite possibly the only vegan, straight edge kid in this town.

Always happy to connect with people who have an original take on things, which is what drew me here in the first place. I can relate to the pork thing!

When I was a child we ate lots of Campbell's Pork & Beans. I loved the beans, but eating those chunks of pork fat always awoke my gag reflex. Sadly, my father insisted that I eat the pork. It made mealtime miserable for me.

Took me 33 years to step away from meat altogether and another ten to see the light on dairy products, in 1985!

First, mainly for health reasons, then for animal rights and environmentalism. Have become so enthusiastic that I created a website,, to become throughly involved in the “movement”, see it as part of my involvement with Buddhism. Hi! Just saw this thread! We are vegans for almost four years now and have been vegetarian for 10 and 15 years. We're vegans for all reasons. We were already vegetarian for the animals and the environment, and actually viewing Forks Over Knives made us really consider why we were still eating eggs and cheese, we we gave that up overnight and life just got brighter and brighter, more and more full of love and peace! We're 100% on board! :) Now we couldn't imagine not being vegan, because it's brought us such an incredible connection with animals, it's brought us to learn new cuisines and become much better at cooking and creating new dishes, and it's brought us improved health and spiritual well-being. It's the most inspiring and empowering lifestyle change! We're so glad everyone's here giving everyone else good advice on good vegan eats throughout the globe! Love it! :)

Hi everybody! I'm so happy to find all you guys that share your stories so I thought I'd share my short one. I've been vegan for 5 months now, it feels like it's a no-brainer really, after watching "earthlings" and listening to Gary Youroski I couldn't look at meat and dairy in the same way anymore. I'm swedish but live in England now and I've found it to be a reasonable place to be a vegan. Obviously there are always gonna be the smart guys that try to put you down but it's all about remembering the real reasons why you're vegan.

Exept for being a vegan full time now :P, I like spending my time travelling, reading books and watching youtube oddly enough. I actually have my own channel where I used to share my recipes, but now that I'm vegan I'm kinda turning it into a vegan cooking channel, here's the address if you're bored one day youtube/fiorellascooking

Can't wait to join in the discussions and learn more about you guys :)

    Hello fellow vegans and vegetarians,
I've been vegetarian for about 26 years now, (wow hard to believe it's been that long). I used to be vegan, but over the years strayed a little, but about a year ago decided to be a fully committed vegan. I even switched my three dogs to a vegan diet about four months ago and it's going great. I cook for them and even make their kibble. It's nice to have online communities like this, because it can get a little depressing having to live in a non-vegan world, so connecting with kindred spirits is very heartening. Look forward to meeting people.
    Cheers, Karin

    Hello everybody,
I am sorry that I have not yet introduced myself even though I've been in the page for some time now. I am Raquel and I am from Portugal, even though I have lived in South Africa since 2010. The past Dec. 4th marked my first vegan anniversary (wish I had been for longer!) and my wake up call was the Ghadimai "festival" in Nepal last year. I was busy signing all the petitions I could and sharing the "event" on FB to raise awareness when suddenly this thought hit my brain: "Wait a moment, Raquel, what the heck are you doing? So you blame this festival that happens ever 5 years when it happens every day in the western world where YOU live." Being face to face with my just-realized hypocrisy made me immediately start considering a vegan lifestyle. Then I watched Earthlings which stamped my decision of NEVER again wanting to go back to my old habits. My motto has been "If I don't need, I will not sacrifice." The reason why I joined this and other groups is because I'd really like to meet more vegans so that I don't feel so alone, especially at social events. Let's just say that life among meatarians is getting a bit on my nerves. ;( Have a good day you all! xx

Hi everyone! I'm a preschool teacher from northern Virginia and I'm new to vegetarianism and looking for some tips on diet/staying with the diet and anything else you might think would help a blossoming vegetarian! Thanks!

Hi! I have only been vegan for 2 months and I will never look back. I miss cheese, oh how I miss cheese, but other than that, it was easy for me to transition from carnivore to full vegan. I don't even use honey!
I look forward to learning new ways to cook, places to eat, and being healthy.
I'm from NewWest, BC Canada. I have 2 kids. My youngest still eats whatever he wants, but my eldest (16) has become vegan and has done very well for herself.
Hope to learn lots from everyone.

    Hello, dear fellows

I'm Bruno, a 25-year-old guy from Feliz, a small town in southern Brazil. I'm a vegetarian (mostly vegan, actually) since about one year now and I'm interested, as well as in veganism, in organic farming. I believe we are facing a kind of food dictatorship since a few decades now, especially in the poorer countries, driven by standardization of consumption and economies of scale, so I think veganism and organic farming are some tools to fight against it.

I knew about HappyCow during a recent trip to Bolivia, where it helped me to find vegan and vegetarian restaurants along the way. Since then I've tried to contribute as much as possible to the platform by writing reviews, submiting and updating listings, adding photos etc.

Hope to meet some nice people around here, share experiences and keep the good work towards a less cruel world.

Posted by Tues at 04/17/16 07:22:16

I'm Tuesday, but please call me Tues. I am a 24-year-old female who was born and raised in Dallas, Texas. I moved to eastern North Carolina when I was 15, but I don't plan on living here forever. Anyway, I have been an on again off again vegan (or sometimes vegetarian) for many years (since age 12/13), but always gave up on following a vegan diet (I'm working on the vegan lifestyle changes, that's going to take more transitioning time though, because I need to learn more about various aspects of the subject) and one of my biggest issues was that I would give in to wanting to fit others peoples' ideals of "normal" (which is odd, because "normal" isn't something I have ever been called nor truly aspired to).

I am turning over a new leaf today though and I am living my life for myself. I am going to start giving myself the love and respect I deserve.

I am tired of being someone who gives up on something they truly want, because they're afraid of it being "too hard". I'm done being that person.

With that said, I am going back to being a vegan. I would love to make friends who have similar views and find a support system within this site.

    I hope you're all doing well. :)

Thank you for taking the time to read this,

I'm Tiffany (: 24 y/o from a small farm town in IL (Streator)- I've been vegetarian for nearly 11 yrs, & just recently decided it was time to go vegan. I have absolutely no vegetarian/vegan, so I came here to socialize with a few others who have the same view as me, as well as a bit more support as I continue to make the switch to a cruel-free lifestyle

    Happy 2017 everyone!

My name is Eva, I'm 34, from Germany but live in South Florida. Next month will be my 2-year vegan anniversary and before that I was vegetarian since 2007. So 10 years since I've had meat. I'm continuously amazed how vegan products have improved and more and more vegan options are springing up everywhere. Thanks to Meetup, I've also connected with other vegans in my local area in real life, which is awesome.

Happy Cow has been a great resource and I finally decided to join the site. Looking forward to contribute what I can.

Hello everyone! My name is Irina and I live in Turin. I have been vegetarian for 4 years but over the last few months I have been eating mostly vegan so starting with the new year I decided to make it official :) I have been struggling to find someone to talk to about it since no one around me is vegan and as much as I try to explain my decision no one seems to want to listen. I decided that it might be healthy for a change to talk to some like-minded people :)
