  • Just an "off" day?

I reeeeeeally do not like to give unfavorable reviews, being loath to deprive someone of his livelihood, but as this is a semi-private forum of like-minded animal lovers (rather than Trip Advisor) here goes: my pancakes were not cooked. Of course, the ideal degree of darkness is to some extent a matter of personal taste, but please believe me when I write that I fall firmly into the lightly browned camp. Of the three on my plate, none was less pallidly yellow than the one before it. My husband reported that his were edible — just. (Note: The brown you see in my posted photo is maple syrup, not the result of a Maillard reaction). My other criticism is that they were served with fresh fruit, which consisted largely of apples and pears. I neither expect nor desire berries in October, but unyieldingly firm produce simply does not belong on a pancake. I also realize that ripeness in figs can be difficult to judge, but the two quarters I received were nearly as hard as the cubes of apple. The few slices of plum that were present, on the other hand, were both seasonal and complementary; persimmons, which are ubiquitous here in autumn, would have been another good choice, gastronomically and aesthetically, or perhaps carefully sectioned pieces of orange. Other breakfast choices for vegans were muesli and garnished soy yogurt, both of which, requiring no heat, would almost certainly have been safer.
