- Coach & Horses Pub / Secret Tearoom
Pub Veggie pub the Coach and Horses has several vegan options on their main menu - tofish n chips and several different pies with mash n gravy. The tofish n chips is excellent, really good batter and sauce. The pie n mash is great comfort food. Fillings such as leek, mushroom and chestnut / chilli bean / goulash. A couple of vegan choices of gravy too - we had very tasty mustard gravy. You can also get sides like onion rings - recommended! Norman's Coach and Horses has a long history of association with Private Eye and boozy journalists - Jeffrey Bernard is Unwell is set there. Traditional tatty pub feel but with cartoons and memorabilia from the magazine and the play. It has a nice feel. There are a couple of cats in residence - it was sweet to see the humans in the busy pub searching for seats but happily leaving the ones claimed by the cats alone. Secret Tearoom You have to ask about the Tearoom and the entrance is behind the bar. It's a good idea to book in advance, particularly if you want to go at the weekend. You have to go upstairs where there is a vintage tearoom theme, including the music, which is cute. However, the service was incredibly slow and disorganised, even though they weren't busy, so don't go if you are in a hurry. If they had been able to offer a whole vegan cream tea we'd definitely have ordered it but the only vegan thing they had was one cake, so we just had tea and cake - don't know why they don't provide a vegan option on the whole cream tea as that would be great and their downstairs offer is very vegan-friendly. The tea and cake were great, very rich chocolate and coconut cake and a good pot of tea (they have a massive range of teas). Updated from previous review on 2014-05-12
