  • UNIQUE EXPERIENCE w FANTSTIC VEGAN CHOICES

If you are in San Antonio, do NOT miss The Cove. Though it’s known for burgers, fish tacos and local beer on tap, they have some clearly marked vegan choices that were really super delicious! I walked to The Cove from Riverwalk, in the dark, and it’s not in a nice part of town (I got a cab after my meal so I didn’t walk back the same way). The people at and around The Cove, probably don’t live around there and I think they were having some school fundraiser party with an auction and photo booth (there were happy kids running around playing everywhere). The Cove was touted on HappyCow for great vegan food and when I walked up on it, you can hear the excellent music. The surprise is that it’s SO SO CLOSE to one of those DIY carwashes (with the coin vacuums and all), I mean really close you have to walk through the carwash (like you can get sprayed close..LOL). Then I found out, it IS a carwash. It’s also a laundry mat! It’s an amazing property and it’s got a beachfront vibe, and though it’s really not in the best part of San Antonio, once you’re in the gates you are transported to a really cool beachy blues environment. The locals told me that The Cove started out as a carwash (and a laundry mat..I’m not sure what was there first), then they expanded little by little to the property and added an ice cream stand first, then sandwiches, then an outdoor bar with misters, but it was still too hot in the summer to be outside, so then they bought this big green house that is now the indoor bar. Today they are a SLO (Sustainable, Local, Organic) focused restaurant with a beer garden have an immense property with an indoor outdoor bar, and excellent band lineup, an amazing playground area in the garden area for the kids, tons of space with all kinds of picnic and indoor/outdoor seating choices with homemade planters and fun lighting. They are still a carwash and a laundry mat! I had some AWESOME vegan food. I tried the vegan bacon cheeseburger with cashew cheese, I had a grilled Portobello burger “naked style” (on salad w/sautéed spinach), vegan corn gazpacho and a kale salad with avocado and toasted pumpkin seeds—they have gluten free buns too (not sure if those are vegan). I asked a lot of questions when I ordered and they were totally prepared. Quite amazing and overall an experience not to miss.
