I won't defend the actions of the owner, as well-intentioned as they may have been at the time. In fact, the use of a deadly weapon in what I imagine was a somewhat busy restaurant was incredibly irresponsible, and the individual who fired the shots should be made to understand the results could have been significantly more tragic. Guns are a foolish measure of defense. Having said that, the sixteen year old, and his friend who helped perpetrate the crime of theft was likely no "child". Legally, yes, but emotionally and psychologically, sadly he probably left his childhood a few years back. When you intentionally cause harm to another human being, and in doing so don't hesitate in your actions, you forsake any defense which the status of "child" may bring. I've lived in a neighborhood just south of Utah Station since 2004, so I am well aware of the societal instability present to know that this young man's circumstances did not appear out of whole cloth. But no matter what those circumstances may be, his actions were criminal in nature, and he should bear responsibility for that. As should the owner. If/when they re-open, I will be back to Utah Station, for either the Big Mak, or Utah Smash, and the delightfully crispy Cauliflower Bites. Sláinte.
