Vegan Adventurers – Starting In 1925 – Going Around The World

J. de Leeuw-Pool & family of Andijk (Holland) – vegetarians – living exclusively on raw plants, fruits and wholemeal bread – ……on a grand voyage!

‘Pre-hippies’ – long forgotten by the vegan / vegetarian community.

Postcard-sized & smaller – simple flyers – printed on thin paper – in our Ernest Bell Library collection. Kept in our ‘Wonderful Mavericks & Eccentrics’ file.

Fortunately, around 90 years ago, some folks slipped them between the pages of books. They survived & can now be shared widely.

There are several different versions of this flyer existing. The family seem to have updated & reprinted them in various places! The languages on the reverses of the flyers change.

Did the children enjoy passing them out? Where did the family  end up? If anyone knows, please share any information with us.

The trip took them several years. It also looks as if they replaced / modified their ‘carriage’ several times!

The ‘carriage’ was sometimes described as being pulled by a car (voiture) & sometimes by a donkey or mule – we imagine that the animals were very well cared for – ‘Vegan Police types’ please ‘Shhhhhhh’ – this was almost 90 years ago – 19 years before the official ‘birth’ & renaming of veganism in 1944.

Photograph of Earth, taken by NASA

The Earth’s circumference is almost exactly 40,000 km because the metre was calibrated on this measurement – more specifically, 1/10-millionth of the distance between the poles and the equator – Pole to Equator = 10,000 km = 10,000,000 m.

So a walk / swim from the North Pole to Ecuador is ~ 10,000 km – ‘as the parrot flies’.

Actual circumference is 40007.86 km North Pole to South Pole & up the other side (meridional) !

The Earth is 40075.017 km around the equator (equatorial) . Wiki.
