Restaurant Highlight: The 78 in Glasgow, Scotland

One trip to Glasgow’s hip The 78 is just the beginning. Any visitor will quickly realize that not only does The 78 live up to its stellar reputation, but that 78 visits won’t be nearly enough.

From the moment guests see the unassuming, pub-style threshold, to the end of their experience, the cozy atmosphere, incredible dishes, and friendly staff can turn any patron into a regular. If you’re interested in a brew and some live music, come around on a weekend night. The talent is displayed on a chalkboard until the night of the show, so regulars can know who’s coming.

Like many locally-owned and operated restaurants, The 78 boasts a menu that changes daily, and some items are always available. Before diving into the mouth-watering food items, let’s take a moment to appreciate their espresso bar. It is pure magic!

The best mocha in the world is from The 78. No need to add in the sugar from the packets served with your cup. The blend of velvety chocolate, soy milk, and espresso is perfect all on its own. It will be the centerfold of your dreams for weeks afterward, and that’s a promise.

Menu offerings represent multiple cultures around the world, from the Middle East to South America. Aside from international fares, there is also the Scottish standby: hearty soup. If you’re in the mood for a burger, then their veggie patty is the perfect texture and flavor to satisfy that craving! Picture a grill, summer, and mouth-watering goodness. That’s The 78’s veggie burger, only this time you won’t be standing in the hot sun for hours to get a burger that hits the spot. You’ll be served by the kindest of wait staff, and feel like family to boot!

Even after visiting Italy, the dairy-free creaminess and the flavorful blend of this pasta carbonara dish on the menu is impressive. The seitan bacon and plant-based cheese bursts in your mouth with each bite, challenging your taste buds and leaving you sated.

Shawarma takes you to its origins in the east, with a jackfruit meat substitute and veggies that are coated in the most decadent of sauces. Even for those of us that aren’t crazy about jackfruit, it just works in this dish. It’s never a bad thing for a meat substitute to come from the produce section of the store rather than the packaged offerings of its aisles!

Now that we’ve exhausted all our options from this day’s menu, let’s head on over to the most important meal of the day…dessert!

Sure, yours truly was praying the dessert of the day would be The 78’s ethereal strawberry cake. Even though it wasn’t available this day, let’s just say it wasn’t a mistake to take a chance on the churros and a chocolate delicacy instead! The photos speak for themselves.

Who doesn’t want some of that on their plate? Suddenly, a full stomach has more than enough room left for a 78 dessert…

Not only is The 78 offering incredible food, but their innovation and commitment to cruelty-free offerings makes them more than worthy of 5 stars. As our world progresses towards a more loving environment for animals, restaurants like this one blaze the path to a culinary future vegans used to only dream of. And with alternatives like The 78, that future is undeniably bright.
