good food - Edit
I like coming here to unwind and hang out. The atmosphere is friendly! I usually just grab a coffee and a little vegan pastry. But they have vegan meals, smoothies, kombucha on tap. It's a nice place!

Excellent breakfast wrap - Edit
I added a lot of Tabasco to this perfectly yummy curried tofu wrap (fully vegan) which came out hot and delicious. Service was super friendly and helpful. Clean and nice vibes inside, with beautiful little stickers and art for sale. Bookmarked for my next trip to Portsmouth.

Always wonderful - Edit
In the nine years I've been visiting White Heron in Portsmouth, I've had a consistently fantastic experience. The staff has always been kind and pleasant. The food has always been delicious. There is always an excellent section of vegan options both pastries and meal options. +1 for doing away with the upcharge for vegan milk!
Read moreWhen I'm having a down day, White Heron is where I like to go as a happy place. I'm happy to have this wonderful place in my community and always look forward to visiting when I return home from a trip.
PRO TIP: there's more parking in the lower lot to the right of the building.
Pros: vegan donuts
Cons: Yeah, the parking can be tough

Baked goods are yummy, breakfast wrap is meh - Edit
I’ve liked all of the baked goods I’ve had here, the vegan breakfast wrap is very bland. It’s pretty disappointing.

Coffee and vegan breakfast wrap - Edit
Delicious! Tofu scramble, hash, vegan sausage. Ethiopian medium roast coffee. Everything was delicious. The wrap was huge! I look forward to going back in the future and trying other food and teas.
Read moreParking lot is small but there were 2 spots available on a Saturday morning at 11 am. High customer turnover, so spots turn over too. I like that they do all in their power to recycle and compost. Thats more than I do at home.

Consistently wonderful - Edit
I don't know what was with the review previous to mine but this person was SO harsh and White Heron is a fabulous place that I have had nothing but wonderful experiences with. OK so the parking isn't great but for me it is not a deal breaker. All of the people working are lovely and I have had many a conversations with them. I love that they use compostable cups/utensils etc. Their vegan options are awesome. They always have two vegan muffin options and in the afternoon usually two vegan donut options. They are baked donuts but DO NOT lack in any way. The flavors are unique and delicious. They are always willing to check ingredients and make a lot of their syrups ( including their chai latte concentrate) in house. It is made with cane sugar instead of honey! Also their mochas with non dairy milk are vegan. There are many places to sit and relax. If you are visiting Portsmouth, White Heron is an absolute must!

Can’t Fix Something Unless You Know About It - Edit
Where do I begin...
Read moreFor starters, if the rating allowed for negative stars, I would award them -5 stars.
Next let’s talk about the parking situation. I award them with the title for “The Worst Parking Lot in Portsmouth”. Enough said...
Since day one of stepping foot in here, I don’t know why I kept on periodically bringing my money to this business. I’m all for supporting local business, but this one is far from anything spectacular. Super overrated.
Never have I been impressed with their service here. You would think after my tenth return getting the same beverage, it would be easy to get it right now the eleventh time. It’s tea...get it right. There should never be a reason why hot tea should take a long time putting together when there are only 2 other people waiting for their food. I am forgiving when they are busy. But another problem is when EVERYONE around you is served and you are waiting there for ATLEAST another 5 minutes for your hot tea, that’s a massive lack of attention.
“It’s not me, it’s them.”
The staff can afford to say hi and smile more often than never. IT GOES A LONG WAY! Multiple time I had tried to engage myself with a friendly “hi!”—NOTHING! I don’t know what language they speak, but I don’t speak “dead face”.
As far as any transaction goes, if you are deserving of a tip I am generous. However, I have always been disappointed and will never apply a tip on the option tip screen. If they swing the screen around and discover a tip was not left, they will have the audacity to swing the tip screen back to you, again in hopes of a tip. I give these millennials and A+++ for a poor lack of customer service skills.
Don’t get me started on TEA SHOP RECORDS. They don’t know the vinyl market. It’s a complete joke!
MANY will think that this is a rough review, but before anyone passes judgement on me, here is the proper viewpoint:
You can fix anything that you don’t no is broken. Because of my many experiences here, I have low expectations that my review will matter. NO LONGER WILL I PLAN ON COMING BACK.
Cons: Offerings, Staff, Parking

Consistent Quality - Edit
There's always 2 deliciously creative vegan donut flavors and 2 vegan muffin flavors available on any given day. I don't eat the sandwich/meal options very often, but there's a couple vegan wraps that are decent. Good quality espresso to boot.

AMAZING!! - Edit
I visited White Heron for the first time this past weekend and WOW I wish I could go everyday. Their vegan breakfast burrito is AWESOME and I also had a chickpea-based "un-chicken" salad that was delicious. They also have other vegan options that sound amazing.
Read moreThey have a huge selection of teas, abundant seating (including a very comfortable couch!), and a nice bar at the window for people watching. Really, if you're in the area treat yourself and go to White Heron!
