Best Bakery Deli

Smith & Deli has a wide range of sweets and savoury, deli, snacks as well as larger meal sized canteen food. My favourite sandwich is the Maury Ballstein. They have excellent strong chai (not unflavoured & watered down like most other places) and great coffee.

Possibly the best sandwich I’ve ever had!

The most incredible range of sandwiches and pastries. I had the ‘briskly business’ sandwich, a vanilla & matcha doughnut, and the blackberry iced matcha. Everything was so stunning, I can’t fault a thing. The staff are super friendly, there’s a little plant based shop / pantry inside, and the interior is gorgeous. Definitely bring your appetite if visiting here, as you’ll want to try everything!

Special place for vegans!

I was blown away by this place! The options were great, from marmite rolls to vanilla custard, sandwiches and everything tasted really good!

Oil-soaked sandwich and poor service

Unfortunately, I wasn’t satisfied with the concept, the service, or the food. It’s one thing that the satanic vibe is personally off-putting to me, but beyond that, there was a general sense of reluctance and low energy from the staff, which didn’t feel welcoming.

I ordered a sandwich with a gluten-free option. I requested it gluten-free, and without any prior notice they charged an extra $5 for the gluten-free option. I assume that’s standard, but they really should have told me in advance.

Then I ordered this sandwich and it took nearly 20 minutes just to heat it up. There wasn’t a big line, and most people around me had already received their orders, so I don’t really understand why it took that long.

But the main point is the food — that’s what makes or breaks the whole experience. And honestly… I was not happy with the “wagu” sandwich at all. It had basically no flavor; it was just a warm, soft filling. Nothing about the sauce stood out. There was some kind of sour chili sauce in it, but it was extremely weak — you could barely taste it. And the vegan “meat” was this cheese-like, soft, juicy texture — and as I ate it, oil kept dripping onto the plate, to the point that by the end of the sandwich the plate was completely covered in oil. That was really off-putting and disgusting. I’m guessing the vegan meat was deep-fried in cold oil.

Overall, I’m sorry, but this was the weakest vegan restaurant experience I’ve had in Melbourne — and possibly even globally. It’s especially disappointing considering the price, because I paid close to $30 for that sandwich. And I specifically asked the staff what they recommend, what a good option is — and this was one of the items they suggested (their second recommendation). If the recommended food is this weak, I can’t imagine what the rest is like.

In a league of it's own

Smith Deli is so far ahead of everyone else it's ridiculous. The sandwiches are beyond compare, I've truly never had anything like them. The desserts/sweet treats are absurdly good, I don't even understand how you can make donuts that good. Its places like this that reaffirm how much I love the vegan community.

Pros: Incredible sandwiches, Incredible desserts, Lovely staff

Just go there now. This place needs no review.

Everyone knows about how amazing this place is. Never a bad meal.
The kind of food that makes your body and soul collapse completely in your seat overwhelmed with taste bud pleasure.
Savoury, sweet, take home meals. Do not leave without take home Pack of Tiramisu. One says family size, which I can confirm is completely fine for a family of "one" to consume on their own.

Pros: Everything, All the things, 100% of this place

So many tasty options

Cafe, deli and store all vegan. We had breakfast and bought a few things to take home. Place was full the whole time we were here. Gluten free breakfast and lunch options.

Came back for lunch, had the hot pastrami sandwich, was amazing 😋 and couldn’t leave without trying the jam donut (gluten free), yum but should have got it heated up.

And today had a Chickn Peri sandwich, one of the best things I’ve ever eaten 🤩

Great selection & delicious!

Really is worth the hype - coffee is perfect and the food is equally. Plus, they have a nice selection of takeaway items (wine, cheese, pre-made savouries, etc)

Excellent sandwiches and “meat” pie!

Three days in a row, we started our day with the half hour walk from our hotel to Smith & Deli for breakfast - it was that good!

Day one, we shared the huge “peri-normal activity” sandwich - grilled chicken, slaw, grilled radicchio, garlic aioli and peri peri sauce, in focaccia - lightly toasted so the bread was crisp, but the salad components still fresh.

Day two, we had to try the meat pie - it was incredible! Wish we could have had more, but on day three, they had run out. We also took away a sugar donut each, for our trip to St Kilda - reallt light and fluffy.

We saved the best for our final day, when we had the “brisky business” - brisket, crispy potato straws, mushroom sauce, rocket and chimichurri. We were sorely tempted to get another, but opted for a takeaway croissant, which was very good too.

Definitely recommend a visit to Smith & Deli, which also has a small shop with a range of other vegan goodies!

Pros: Excellent sandwiches , “Meat” pie is fantastic

Nice Food, Crappy Service

The ‘canteen’ lunches here used to be great value; a little less so now with less variety.

The food speaks for itself - which is fortunate, because the service is pretty hit and miss - the unnecessary rudeness of a waitress who messed up an order (left out one of the meals) and apportioned blame onto us, the customers, for failing to pick this up when she read back our order; rather than apologise for missing this in the first place.

Never misses

Honestly a classic Melb Vegan deli. When you think vegan - you think of these guys.

Have always had a lovely meal whenever I’ve come. So many sando, salad, sweet treats, soups, drinks and they’re all pretty creative. If I lived closer they’d have all of my money.

Sadly not what it used to be

I really do mourn the old deli when the sandwiches were made to order. They've gotten rid of nearly all the old range of sandwiches too. At 1230 the Egg martinez was hard around the edges like it'd been there for hours, the Gabagool was fine just a subtle olive taste, and lettuce already browning. For the prices they charge it's really not worth it.

I used to LOVE this deli when it was at Moor St. The huge range of freshly made sandwiches, and daily/weekly changing array of savoury and sweet pastries. It was always my first choice for lunch, now that it's moved I barely think about it.
The sandwich selection has gone down about 75%, and what's left was never my top picks. I'm SO glad they still have the egg Martinez but when we went on Sunday afternoon, it looked like it had been sitting there all day. I still bought it and heated it up when I got home, it obviously wasn't as good and I miss the days when everything was so FRESH. My go to sandwiches still available are the Little Havana and The Godfather. I wish they would bring back The Rocky, Home Alone, and Hail Seitan.
Anyway, we went there for a very late brunch and ordered the big breakfast. They had just run out of the hash brown, so we chose sauteed greens, and mushrooms to go with the bacon, tofu scramble, and baked beans (which we were giving a crapload of). Now, I've had their tofu scramble a couple of times many moons ago when they were serving it at the original Smith and Daughters, and that iteration was amazing, very creamy, and was always the standard I compared others to. I didn't love it this time, there was a flavour I couldn't identify, and I wish there was black salt in it. The sauteed greens were surprisingly my favourite part of the dish, with their chunks of garlic in it.
I'm so sad that whenever I go to Smith&Deli now, I almost always leave feeling a bit disappointed, the food is not as fresh, the pastries certainly nowhere near as fresh (I feel like they're of the quality that they should be discounted), and for the prices they charge, it's hard to justify coming back too often. Maybe you have to go much earlier in the day.
I did buy a tub of the chicken salad, which as always is delicious, especially the little pieces of green apple throughout. It's extremely expensive though, at almost $9.00 for a small tub. Also, the girl who served us, sneezed into her hand, didn't wash or use hand sanitiser, and then served us without gloves. Sigh

Pros: delish chicken salad, egg Martinez, when fresh

Cons: staff sneezed into hand and then served us, expensive, not fresh like it used to be

Yeah! I'm not a huge sweet tooth, but I did try a lot from their old deli. I still remember their delicious jam long johns, and they would constantly be putting out freshly made donut holes etc.

Saved me from near freezing death!

I arrived from Darwin in the early morning and instantly froze to near death. Sitting in their warm establishment, offering me a blanket and eating an extremely delicious scramble roll with a lovely coffee certainly saved me from near freezing death. Bought a few takeaway items to share with friends later because this place is too awesome not to boast about!

SO GOOD!

Fully vegan deli with an amazing selection. Everything I‘ve tried there was so so good.

They have really nice pastries, cake, cookies, a selection of vegan cheeses, frozen food like lasagne or pizzas, tiramisu, and so much more. One of my highlights is the yerba mate soda, which is hard to find!

I went back inside to get some pastries to take home after having lunch there one time, and they even gave me a 2 for 1 deal as they were closing up anyway. :)

Highly recommend

Pros: Friendly, Huge selection, Delicious
