Vegan cafe run by the same people who set up Chiapas Restobar. Serves full range of meals with soups, salads, mains, wraps, and desserts, whilst also offering drinks and occasional music. APR 2014 REPORTED SHUT, MIGHT RE-OPEN LATER IN THE YEAR - please let happycow know if/when it re-opens!

Not What I Expected

In the cold weather (rather than walking) this place is a short cab ride from the city. When we went in there was some kind if class or seminar going on so I had to go into the kitchen to ask for assistance. The lady there who spoke a little English was quite helpful though the menu wasn't in English so we just ordered the first things she rattled off rather than asking her to translate the whole thing. The atmosphere Is quite grunge and there are a lot of tables and a bar too. The food was fairly good, the portion size large and the prices inexpensive. I don't, however, think I'll be returning as there is a much larger selection in more comfortable establishments closer to the city.

New place, the food's still excellent

The co-operative which ran the Chiapas restobar has re-opened their vegan cafe at a new location, being the Oldschool Bar just outside the New Holland Island. Apart from the expanded drinks options, the menu remained largely the same, with a full range of food on offer. A couple of items we wanted were not available at the moment but we were able to have replacements. The seitan and chickpeas soup was excellent, spicy and filling. The "anti-stroganoff", also extremely tasty. Fried potato with four types of mushrooms, albeit familiar from Chiapas days, proved another winner. Finally, the mushroom roll was irresistible. The Triple Wheat Ale from the bar was the cherry on top. Friendly service, and extremely cheap for the amount of food we got.

Pros: Great vegan food, huge servings, This being a co-operative, Range of drinks

Cons: Some people smoked at the bar
