Vegan-friendly
Indian
A 99% vegan restaurant, run by a Trust, serves traditional South Indian food. Only non vegan product is ghee. Does not use chilis, tamarind, mushrooms, mustard, maida (refined wheat flour), dalda (cheap oil substitute). Soy milk is used to make buttermilk. Try the vazhaipoo vadai (made with pistils of the banana flower). Hand-pounded (whole) rice is used. Open Mon-Sun 6:30am-10:00pm.

Traditional vegan South Indian - Edit
Traditional South Indian meal that Is served on a banana leaf. They have two options when choosing the type of rice - white and whole grain hand pound. While the taste isn't top notch, it is simple no-nonsense food. This is as good as it gets in a small town in India.

Vegan Meal at Nalan Unavagam - Hotel Nalan - Edit
Situated in a rather nondescript side street, Hotel Nalan has the proud distinction of being the only vegan restaurant probably in the whole of Coimbatore. Started in 2005, Nalan is a trail blazer in the sense that much before veganism started becoming a worldwide trend, this place has been serving healthy, affordable vegan meals for local population. A sentence on the board outside caught my eye - 'Food based on Siddha system of medicine to help people live to their full potential of 120 years'. Chef Amarnath was very happy to tell me about their cooking philosophy. He said, "We don't have a fridge, so all vegetables are bought on the day, all food served is cooked a maximum of 3.5 hours before being served. We only use locally grown seasonal vegetables." Food was served on banana leaves and the price of a meal was also so unbelievably low- Rs 100 about £1.25. My lunch consisted of banana flower vadai, toasted pappad, banana stem stew, fresh greens curry, bitter gourd curry, thoothuvalai - solanum trilobatum (a type of wild medicinal herb native to South India) soup, brown rice and soya butter milk. This was accompanied by millet, jaggery pudding. Food was piping hot and all items except dessert were unlimited. The waiters constantly circulated and served food.
Read moreUsually food I eat is very spicy with a lot of tamarind and both fresh and dried chillies. So I was a bit unsure when it said on the outside that the food had no tamarind, chillies or heavy masala. But when I began eating, the food was so delicious that I didn't miss any of those ingredients. The heat in the food came from black pepper. The stews and curries were low on oil as well but flavoured with freshly grated coconut. The meal not only felt good at the time of eating but was also easy on the stomach. I asked some of the other customers if they knew what the word 'vegan' meant. They all said they knew what vegetarian was but professed ignorance about the word vegan. One gentlemen - Venkatesan said, "I used to have severe acidity problems but the food here suits my stomach well and so I have all my meals here.". Another gentleman, Lakshmanan said that he came there regularly as the food was tasty and healthy.
