Good for vegan breakfast - Edit
We went for breakfast and they have about 3 vegan options and 3 vegetarian options. Everything was really good. The combos are nice and include a small salad and you can get some small vegan pancake with vegan yogurth for free plus juice, coffee and other soft beverages.

So good breakfast! - Edit
The food was absolutely delicious!
Read moreThe seasoning on the Japanese-style plate was especially perfect.
I also really enjoyed the green smoothie from the drink bar—I went back for seconds!
The French toast plate was good, with the French toast itself being very tasty, though the accompanying cooked vegetables had a bit of an unusual flavor.
Even though we came from another hotel, the staff treated us with great care.
I would highly recommend this place to anyone looking to try a traditional Japanese breakfast.

Lovely - Edit
Their dishes are mostly vegan friendly, but they have some non-vegan options.
Read moreVegan Katsu burger and sweet potato sherbet were my favorites! They also have a vegan breakfast menu. I would love to try it when I stay in the hotel where this restaurant is located.

(almost) vegan hotel in central Kyoto - Edit
When I read about a vegan hotel on Happy Cow, I did not look any further and booked a room at the IMU Hotel in Kyoto. It's rather popular, because even while booking months in advance only the tatami room was available. A tatami room is a multi functional room because furniture can be moved depending on the use. During the day a table can be put on the floor, during the night futons can be put there. The futons differ from those in traditional "ryokans" because they are much easier to install.
Read moreThe tatami room is by far the largest room in the hotel, offering space for 4 people. The bathroom is the same size as all the other rooms. During my one week stay I did not hear much noise from other rooms, but a lot from outside. I did notice a moldy smell in the hallways and staircases, even though the hotel had air conditioners running 24 hours (to remove that smell?) in public spaces. The wifi is rather quick, which allowed me to send big files to my office and even use the streaming device (Apple TV / Google Chrome cast) and game console I brought with me.
Rather inconvenient: there's no safe in the room, therefore I had to carry my laptop, game console and expensive DSLR camera with me everywhere. For breakfast, lunch and every single walk outside the hotel I had to carry a heavy and bulky backpack because there's no safe in the room. Storing luggage before or after staying is possible, but this is just a lock on a wire and your luggage is exposed to all people in the lobby. So again I needed to lug the heavy backpack around.
So how about the food? First of all, IMU is no longer a fully vegan hotel. The in house restaurant serves meat and eggs, but the menu is still focused on vegan food (as is the staff). The breakfast is not the usual buffet style, but instead 4 set menus are offered. 2 of these are vegan: a Western and a Japanese style breakfast. I chose the Japanese option every day and it consists of rice, soup (corn or carrot), fried tofu, a tiny salad, pickled vegetables and a piece of fruit. It's so tasty and nutritious that it made a fantastic start to my days. I wish I could make such a breakfast at home!
Although Kyoto has a lot of vegan and vegetarian restaurants, they all seem to have weird opening hours. For example, from 11 am to 15 pm or only on alternate days, etc. Because of several disappointing experiences in a row (closed, sold out, reservation only) I ended up using the IMU kitcken a lot (only breakfast and dinner, no lunch).
Pros: (mostly) vegan kitchen, cheap (but simple), nice location
Cons: no safe in the room

A new, reasonable hotel with vegan options for breakfast, lunch and dinner! - Edit
I stayed here for my solo travel. It’s new and cheaper than normal hotels, and many customers are young foreign travelers and families. I was so happy to have vegan breakfasts at a hotel(a rare find in Japan)!
Read moreBreakfast (¥780 for drop-in) - I recommend Japanese vegan meal (D set). Vegan eel bowl with Japanese tea soup(ヴィーガン鰻のひつまぶし), tofu, veggie deli, fruits, salad /drink bar. Foreign vegan meal is seasonal - I had a tomato soup, baguette, veggie deli, fruits and salad/drink bar. The soup was too sweet and baguette was just ok.
Lunch - tofu steak and curry.
Pros: Vegan breakfast, lunch and dinner at a hotel , Salad/ drink bar for breakfast , They are trying very hard to cater to vegans :’)
Cons: Not too impressive, but right for the price
