More About Me

Reasons why I prefer to eat vegetarian or vegan:

Ethical Animal concerns: I believe that the treatment of animals raised for food in the United States is tantamount to crimes against nature. Animals are denied every natural impulse of a living sentient being on earth. Not only that, workers are expected to mutilate and torture animals that scream in pain and fight for their lives. Ethical Human concerns: Can you imagine wading through the blood of tortured, mutilated, screaming animals fighting for their lives, all day, every day for meager pay? The people who work in slaughterhouses are the poorest in our society and are hidden away from view as not to disturb our sensibilities of discomfort. I feel that our fellow humans working in slaughterhouses are trapped in a hopeless cycle of despair, gradually and insidiously becoming numbed emotionally, mentally, and spiritually. Government statistics seem to support this with data that report that slaughterhouse workers suffer the highest rates of alcoholism, the highest rates of violent crime, the highest rates of domestic abuse, and and the highest rates of suicide. Even whistleblowers, applauded for their courage to step forward, often commit suicide out of post traumatic stress syndrome symptoms.

I joined HappyCow Members Community because:

1. When traveling, I always check Happy Cow in addition to other searches to find vegan restaurants. 2. Our dollar is our most powerful vote. Either we support cruel enterprises by giving them our money or we don't. It is very simple. Happy Cow serves as a resource for allocating my dollars/votes.

Here are some places I've been that I liked... and places that I would like to visit one day:

Places I've been that I liked are too numerous to include, but Kiawah Island, SC, Seattle, WA, San Francisco and San Diego, CA, and Montreal, Canada are a few. I absolutely love NYC and their unending supply of vegan restaurants and juice bars. Candle 79, Candle Cafe, Blossom, and By Chloe are absolute favorites! Places that I'd like to visit are Portland, OR, and Europe.

Some of my favorite veg*n foods include:

I am so simple and easy to please. I love sweet potatoes, yukon gold potatoes, kale, broccoli, tofu, and seitan. Oh, and of course, dark chocolate!

Here are some books, movies, magazines, and my favorites that I would recommend to other HappyCow members:

Forks Over Knives (documentary) Species 'ism (the documentary) VegNews Magazine Diet for a New America (Robbins) The China Study (Campbell) Prevent and Reverse Heart Disease (Esselstyn) Food Empowerment Project (online)
