More About Me
Reasons why I prefer to eat vegetarian or vegan:
1) HEALTH: Being vegan is incredibly healthy. Not only do I feel great, the science backs up the idea that veganism (when well-planned) is one of the healthiest diets in the world. I follow a whole-food, plant-based vegan diet, and agree with Dr. Michael Greger's book "How Not to Die." 2) ENVIRONMENT: It is clear that climate change is real, and that humans are responsible for it. It is also clear that between 18 and 51 (!) percent of all GHGs are from animal agriculture, so being vegan is better for the environment, as well. 3) ANIMAL RIGHTS: To quote Hank Green from his video "Why Are Vegetarians Annoying? (An Exploration of a Cultural Rift)": "Yes, animals raised for food do not have nice lives, and even if they did they would still be killed in the prime of their lives so that I (Hank) could have a tasty snack." The truth is much worse than this, and Hank sugarcoats it, but it is a well-said summary. 4) RELIGION: As a (relatively) religious Jew, I find that the Torah is certainly uncomfortable with eating meat, and that it is God's ideal for humans to be vegan.
I joined HappyCow Members Community because:
I love the website for looking up vegan restaurants in almost every city, and thought it would be worth it to join the community.
Here are some places I've been that I liked... and places that I would like to visit one day:
CITIES VISITED: I've been to Buffalo (NY), Burlington (VT), Hollywood and surrounding municipalities (FL), Jerusalem (Israel), Los Angeles (CA), Montreal (QC, Canada), New York City (NY), Niagara Falls (NY & ON, Canada), Rochester (NY), Safed (Israel), San Diego (CA), and Tel Aviv (Israel). CITIES I WANT TO VISIT: Athens (Greece), Auckland (New Zealand), Bagalore (India), Cape Town (South Africa), Copenhagen (Denmark), Portland (OR), Reykjavik (Iceland), Seoul (South Korea), Singapore, Thimphu (Bhutan), Tokyo (Japan), Vancouver (BC, Canada), and Zurich (Switzerland). I also want to visit Israel again, seeing Jerusalem and Tel Aviv again, but also looking at Be'er Sheva, Eilat, and Haifa. I don't really know how vegan friendly these places are, but they all sound interesting and vegan enough.
Some of my favorite veg*n foods include:
INDIVIDUAL FOODS: Bananas, black beans, blackberries, brown rice, cannellini beans, cauliflower, chickpeas, Ezekiel cereal, flaxseed, anything Gardein, lentils, nutritional yeast, oats, pita, potatoes, seitan, sweet potatoes, tahini, Tofurky tempeh bacon, tofu, walnuts, and watermelon. ACTUAL DISHES: vegan cole slaw, falafel, hummus, Israeli salad, mujaddara, and oatmeal. CUISINES: American, Americanized Chinese, Americanized Indian, Ethiopian (at least the Americanized version), Japanese (at least veggie sushi and noodles), and Mediterranean.
Here are some books, movies, magazines, and my favorites that I would recommend to other HappyCow members:
BOOKS: Just "How Not to Die" by Dr. Michael Greger for now. MOVIES: Just "Cowspiracy" for now. I keep meaning on watching "Peacable Kingdom." "Supersize Me" isn't exactly veg-oriented, but is still close and really good. YOUTUBE CHANNELS: Mic. the Vegan, Nina and Randa, Unnatural Vegan, and The Vegan Zombie.
