| Lacto- Vegetarian Crisis!!! I was brought up lacto-veggy, but I've been re-assessing my beliefs. I don't see any arguments against eating eggs for someone who eats dairy. I can't hold onto beliefs that I can't justify- however much I might want to. Gut instincts just aren't enough. Any information or help would be really...helpful :-) Post Date: 06/06/09, Replies: 98 | ||
| Veg and Vegan What's up with the hostility? Reading through the forums on this website, I am amazed at the amount of hate and hostility, not only toward those considering a change to a vegetarian diet, but by vegans toward vegetarians? Personally, I am a vegetarian. I find it amazing the amount of hatred I have received from vegans on this website. Have those who took up their specific diet forgotten from where they came. Do they really think that spewing hatred is the way to sway people to become more committed to their way of life? Post Date: 07/14/11, Replies: 97 | ||
| Is CHEESE vegetarian??? Indian cheese or Cottage cheese as it is known is vegetarian or dairy product but what about commercially produced cheese such as Mozarella or Feta cheese. Can I eat that??? Post Date: 03/12/12, Replies: 71 | ||
| Favorite Food of the Day I thought it would be fun to have a favorite food of the day thread. You can post here what food you've been drooling over or just loved noshing on today! It can be a recipe item (such as soup, cake, etc) or it can be a single item (durian, carrots, etc). What do you love today? Today I've been loving water chestnuts. I love the light crisp snap and contrast they provide to salads and other dishes. Yum yum! One of these days I swear I'm gonna get some fresh ones, I'm sure I've only experienced the tip of the iceberg by having canned ones. Post Date: 10/27/08, Replies: 56 | ||
| Veggie Protein Sources I've been vegetarian for about 6 months. In that time I've lost over fifty pounds. I also started running a couple of months ago. My question is this, what are some good, high protein sources (vegan or ovo-lacto) that aren't loaded with calories. I still have some weight to lose so I don't want to rely on cheese and other fatty foods. I currently get around 50 grams of protein per day, but from what I've read in Runners World I should be getting much more in order to help with muscle repair. Any suggestions? Thanks. | Lush Why did they get best vegan seller or something award from Peta? When I read 2nd product I checked on the web says extract of goat blood? Post Date: 09/17/08, Replies: 35 | ||
| Vegans and Coffee I am just wondering how many Vegans use coffee. I know a lot of downsides, as well as a few upsides. I know there are a lot of coffee joints that have vegan options, more so than "normal" cafes, often. I have even known some medicinal uses for it, but when taken daily, less useful. So, I'm just curious how many of you use it, why or why not, and what reactions y'all have from it and so forth. Thanks y'all. Post Date: 09/27/10, Replies: 35 | ||
| Mock Meats that are Too Real? I know one thing many vegetarians look for are good mock meats (I do know there are also lots of veg's that don't care for mock meat as much). There is so much talk about how much it is just like meat, etc, etc. But my question is, can mock meat be TOO real? I had a soy ginger chicken the other night that looked and tasted exactly like chicken. I know my non veg friends would have been completely fooled. Now, a lot of people might say "wow, that's great, just like chicken" and I think I may have thought that before, but eating the "chicken" kind of weirded me out. I kept checking the label to make sure it was veg and was only able to eat a little bit. Sure it had great flavor but it was kinda grossing me out! I kept getting the thoughts in my head of eating meat and it was making me sick. Anyone else have this experience? Thoughts? Post Date: 04/17/08, Replies: 33 | ||
| As a new vegetarian I have a question How come there seems to be almost an animosity between vegetarians and vegans? I have stated I am a new vegetarian and there have been some difficult changes to deal with, but I am trying. I first did this for health reasons, and then as I read more, I started to realize how bad animals were treated. I have come across vegans on boards (I admit not this one) who seem to feel that vegetarian is not enough. Isn't it a start? Post Date: 08/13/08, Replies: 32 | ||
| Tell me what you ate yesterday - Vegan I am just curious what YOU eat everyday? What is on your menu? I want to try to make sure I am getting a wellrounded diet because I seem tired as of lately. I know I am not getting a balanced diet but I work full time and have a toddler - it isn't always easy.. I don't have time to whip up some fab meals and a lot of us eat on the go. I need ideas. I will start with yesterday: Breakfast - Oatmeal with blueberries/coffee (I usually eat at the office at my desk so I don't cook breakfast) Snack - Homemade black bean dip (yum) with frito's Lunch - Veggie sub (no cheese) w/ mustard and oil/vinegar. I felt like it was just too much bread and not enough veggies Dinner - 1 slice of tofutti's pizza and a handful of blueberries I then passed out for the night but I usually eat veggies at dinner but this is real life which is not always ideal. | Starting up vegetarianism or veganism Hello all :) New to the happy cow, and looking at starting vegetarianism or if I can, maybe veganism. I've spent a couple of days trying to make the move, but I find myself /really/ wanting to nosh, on, say, pork bits. And I know if I'm always hungry then I will just never stay with it, so I am looking for some tips on staying full. I got myself some soymilk, but it makes me go yick, because it tastes powdery to me. Vegetarian burgers are fine to me, as are the vegan mayo and rice cheese I got. :) So also if anyone had trouble transitioning, could you tell me what you did? Some of the things I've seen working in food service helps the want to eat all the chicken, because I see a bunch of squicky things, but still... I'm used to meat 3 or more times a day... Help? | Vegan Vanilla Wafers? I know I've seen these somewhere at some point in time but now that I need them I can't find them. Anyone know of a good company that makes some and/or which major stores might carry them? So far no luck at Whole Foods- Arroyo or my local health food store. There's a recipe in the latest issue of VegNews for rum balls that I'm hankering to try. :) Post Date: 12/19/08, Replies: 24 | ||
| What I hate about being Vegan So, a vegetarian for over 10 years here. Vegan for over a year and though I am a fervent sustainability advocate I have to say there are some things I just get angry about... You see first off I always feel like being vegan is like being a Nazi or a pedoph. when you accidentally public speak out about your choice to not eat meat people jump on you as though it's evil! "So, you think you're better than...." "So, I'm supposed to feel bad for eating meat???" "You're not one of those crazy animal rights protesting types, are you?" And that's just from spilling on not eating meat, when you talk about not eating whey, honey, milk and eggs people ask you... "do you hug trees?" And many other annoying things. Furthermore, what drives me insane at times is fake vegetarian or vegan branding: "e631" is not vegetarian, neither is whey or mono- and diglycerides. I just want to go up to the head offices of these brands and throw rotten eggs at them, I just get so incredibly angry when I think about it! Last but not least other vegans or vegetarians who when they quit immediately eat the most ethically abominable things like lamb or whatever. I just get so angry at times. Being a vegetarian is not a phase or a trend it's a part of my life! O.k. well sorry if I offended anybody. But please go on and help yourself. I donate to many NGO's that neglect environmentalism, but sometimes people around me just drive me crazy. Furthermore, I stand by anybody who is vegetarian even for one day, but still sometimes just get angry!!! Post Date: 10/07/12, Replies: 24 | ||
| I have a question???? I am pretty new to this site and from what I read on the forum alot of people on here are saying how hard it is for them to go vegan. Now this is just my opinion but if you really want to do something then it shouldn't be that hard for you to do. I mean for me I went from eating meat, cheese, drinking milk one day and the next day completely cut out all animal products and biproducts from my diet. It was all or nothing. I didn't do the whole vegetarian transition stage, and I just don't understand it. If you want to be vegan go vegan, if not then you shouldn't say how hard it is because the just gives people who could be vegan the wrong impression about the lifestyle. It is a great way to live and is not hard if it is really what you want to do. GO VEGAN! Post Date: 11/08/07, Replies: 23 | ||
| Making the vegetarian to vegan transition I'm what I consider a vegan under construction, although I've been vegetarian for years and years. The idea to become vegan came about when a colleague asked if I have even considered it and encouraged me to try it for at least two weeks. Those two weeks became three months before I went back to vegetarian. I was happy that I could hang in there but I began to miss some of my favorites. Now, I feel a little guilty going back vegetarian and I've kept a lot of my vegan foods in my diet. Should I continue what I'm doing now? Has anyone else had this problem? How should I approach going back vegan? Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated thanks! Post Date: 04/17/14, Replies: 23 | ||
| Hilary "Cow Muncher" Clinton "I'm feeling good today." She would feel 1,000% better eating plants! ! ! .................................................. http://news.yahoo.com/s/nm/20080218/pl_nm/usa_politics_dc_11;_ylt=AidCQBgKVboZ8FjkU0.P3l.pg9IF "I need your help on Tuesday," she told one family as she mingled with voters at Miss Katie's diner and sat down for a lunch of corned beef hash and eggs. Asked what she thought her chances were in the election, she said, "I'm feeling good today." She later sampled chips with mole sauce and bought some red jalapeno peppers -- one of her favorite foods -- at the El Rey supermarket. | becoming a vegan I can go weeks without eating any products that have some sort of animal product in it (eggs, powdered skim milk.....) Ive been a vegetarian for almost 2 years now so when I exclude the animal based products for a couple of months at a time does that make me a vegan? Also, I heard this was debatable when referring to honey. Can you be vegan and use honey and if yes is it bought from a farm where the consumer knows that the bees are not harmed? | The best way to promote vegetarianism I thought I would toss out this question so we HappyCow members can have a positive debate about the best way to get others to consider being vegetarian. I know opinions vary wildly on this subject, and range from aggressive action to simply living a healthy, peaceful life and hoping it rubs off on others. Many of us, myself included, have gone through various stages over the years, and I'm curious to hear your thoughts about which way works the best overall. Post Date: 12/07/11, Replies: 22 | ||
| MSG by any other name? NYT article, http://www.nytimes.com/2008/03/05/dining/05glute.html?_r=1&scp=1&sq=+msg&st=nyt&oref=slogin That article really hit a nerve with me. The hydrolized soy protein and autolyzed yeast are MSG; both are in products sold in health food stores. Personally, I am very allergic/sensitive to MSG and when I was young passed out in Chinatown (Philly) when out with a friend's family. They put me in the car!! I remember a foggy scary feeling about being in their car all drugged up. The fact they they re-market it is BS!! I know pico de gallo chips have them in it. I can't off hand remember all the items I read those ingredients in, but I think a call to those companies is in order. The writer's slant is not a health conscious one to say the least; that's not why I post the article. More so that I found it informative and disturbing as to what I did not know. | Vegan dating Hi everyone! This is my first post on this site. So please excuse me if I posted to the wrong place. I wasn't sure what to first talk about on here so I decided to ask you guys a question that has been on my mind from some time now. What are your opinions on who you date, considering most of you are vegetarians? I recently am looking for somebody to possibly date or hang out with and because vegetarianism isn't very common where I live, most local people have an omnivoric diet. What are your philosophies on who you date? Does it matter? Is it ethical to date an omnivore? Would you try to convert them if you date them? I don't like online dating BTW. Let me know your opinions. Thanks! -TheVegetableAddict Post Date: 04/16/14, Replies: 20 | ||
| Vegan Dogs - Vegan Dog Food Is anyone raising their dog(s) vegan? I'd love to hear about your experience. I'm thinking about getting a dog but I cringe thinking of all the meat products, raw hide bones, etc. If you have a vegan dog, or tried it and then switched back to regular food, please tell me about your experience. Did you start her/him on vegan dog food as a puppy? or as adult? How did she/he make the transition from regular (meat) dog food? Did you gradually switch from regular to vegan food? If so, over what period of time? What brand of vegan dog food do you recommend? Did you try many types of vegan dog food, which did you stick with and why? Post Date: 12/17/14, Replies: 20 | ||
| Do NOT buy Bic, 3M, and Scotch! These companies all test on animals! And they are very common household products. For example, Bic pens and lighters, and 3M tape and bubble mailers. For pens, buy Pilot instead. They do not test on animals AND all of their products are free of animal ingredients, making them completely vegan! Pilot pens are very easy to find in stores, and they even make permanent markers, but I have never seen their markers in stores so you might have to order them online. Still better than Sharpies, because Sharpies have animal ingredients (animal derived pigment)! For tape, and bubble mailers and packing materials, I'm not completely sure, but I have found no evidence of Duck testing on animals. I am not positive if their stuff is all vegan, but at least its better than supporting 3M and Scotch, because 3M and Scotch test on animals! So unless someone has better info, I suggest Duck for mailers and tape. And glue! Gorilla Glue and Elmer's are both vegan! No animal testing or ingredients! The BAD: Bic 3M Scotch Sharpie The GOOD: Pilot Duck Gorilla Glue Elmer's Post Date: 08/18/16, Replies: 20 | ||
| Does anyone have a Vegan Posse? Being 1 of 3 vegans I knew in St.louis I moved to LA for among other things the opportunity to have a group of friends who shared similar ethical/environmental/social ideals as myself. I'm meeting very awesome people and my network of compassionate friends is growing. I wonder how many of us are vegan loners or has anyone achieved my dream of the kick butt all vegan posse of friends that gets vegan drinks / meetups / dinners / potlucks, etc? Also, how do you balance your existing friends/family who prefer to remain blind to realty with your compassionate eyes open crew? Post Date: 08/14/08, Replies: 19 | ||
| How bad is honey Hi Was just wondering why vegans don't like using honey? It helps sweeten herbal teas like rooibos. What other sweetener alternatives are there? Post Date: 09/26/10, Replies: 19 | ||
| Vegan with cat (food)? Alright, so I became a vegetarian around 3 yrs ago, and been vegan for about a year. I was turned (from being a voracious carnivore) by an intellectual argument with a friend (which I think, more than anything, just made me face what I already always knew). The intellectual questions I wrestled with after becoming vegetarian I eventually resolved by becoming vegan -- however the conundrum I am pondering now I am unable to resolve. And I am reminded of it every time I crack open a can of food for my two cats. Cats, unlike people, have clearly not evolved for a vegan diet. They are carnivores through and through. So to keep them, I must feed them meat, which I am only able to get, really, through industrial agriculture, as all cat food is made through the "byproducts" of this grizzly industry. So I essentially sustain the happiness of my cats through the suffering of other creatures. But what alternative is there, really? Any thoughts on this would be greatly appreciated. Thanks all, Andrey Post Date: 03/01/11, Replies: 19 |
