| Po Tai Vegetarian Cafe - veggy heroes! HappyCow spices up the experiences that you get when "veggy traveling". Terese made me smile this morning with her Jan, 1, 2009 review - I thoroughly enjoyed reading her experience of the tiny "Po Tai Vegetarian Cafe" in East Kowloon. See - happycow.net/reviews.php?id=11010 18 months ago I had a wonderful meal / experience in Po Tai - it is great to know that the little place is still buzzing. I found "Po Tai" as I was riding a bus one day to the old Hong Kong Airport site - I noticed the Chinese character for "Vegetarian" above the storefront & jumped off the bus to try it out. . . Please list / review even the beatest veggy eating places as you stumble across them. Post Date: 01/01/09, Replies: 0 | ||
| Recipe Section Quick question... is there a way to save recipes found on the recipe section of this site rather than copy & paste? Thanks! :) Post Date: 11/23/08, Replies: 4 | ||
| MINOR technical suggestion for Login page When logging in, it would be nice to set the focus to the "Username" textbox, so one wouldn't have to click on it first. I often clear my browser cookies so I have to login everytime I visit HappyCow. Post Date: 11/11/08, Replies: 4 | ||
| another suggestion for review page On a state page, it may be helpful to also have the filter that says both HF and cafes, or cafes only or HF only. If seeking a cafe on the road, it can help isolate more easily if seeking a cafe to eat rather than HF offerings. thanks Post Date: 10/04/08, Replies: 1 | ||
| Forum Rules for HappyCow I think all personal attacks and passive aggressive behavior should be grounds for banishment. On the Postpunkkitchen.com the moderators first talk to the offender and let them know if their post was inflammatory. If it happens again or the person doesn't apologize or clarify themselves they are banned. There's no room for negativity. When a discussion goes beyond positive constructive friendly debate it should be removed. Post Date: 09/22/08, Replies: 15 | ||
| "Stat's" page - natural growth - Thank you for the new "Stat's" page Mr. Eric - http://www.happycow.net/reports/happycow_stats.html It is inspiring to see new vegan eating places opening daily / getting listed / being updated / receiving reviews. HappyCow.net is growing so quickly & without any artificial growth hormones! Post Date: 09/21/08, Replies: 8 | ||
| Links to video media I would be interested in finding links to free video files concerning vegetarianism and how meat-eating contributes to the slaughtering of animals. The files I have found at www.peta.org have been very effective getting friends to take the subject of vegetarianism seriously. If HappyCow could provide links to other sources, this would be very helpful. Post Date: 09/13/08, Replies: 5 | ||
| Canadian Rant I am a newbe to this website and not sure if I'm even in the right spot for my little rant that follows. Apologies I have traveled a lot over the last 20 years, 10 of them as a vegetarian. As you all well know, restaurant menu offerings around this planet for vegetarians can be a bit meager at times (God bless the Vegans in this regard). I have become a bit tired of my choices in most restaurants being restricted to a veggie burger, pasta or a salad (if anything at all). In the same breath, in some unique places, I have come across some amazing and creative vegetarian foods from all parts of the world. I have often thought "If I could only bring this type of vegetarian food back home to Canada, people wouldn't care weather it was vegetarian". So I did, and my wife and I opened up a little restaurant not far from Queens University in Kingston Ontario to serve these great international vegetarian foods (that also cater to our vegan friends). So where am I going with all this. Since we have been open we have had some great customers pass through our doors who tell us they love the food ect. However, I was hoping that being close to a University like Queens, and it's a big school, that we would at least attract the veggie student population. That hasn't happened even after our best efforts to advertise as our little place is now hurting. We are the only vegetarian restaurant in town. What am I missing here as time is running out. Thanks Post Date: 09/06/08, Replies: 11 | ||
| No html links? I can understand blocking out some HTML, but links as well? How are we supposed to link to vital stuff both in this website, and other websites? Many sites make a mistake by not allowing linking in their forums. They feel it will make their visitors go elsewhere while in reality, it improves the websites value in the webiverse. Search engines don't like websites very much that keep to themselves... they like websites that are linked to, and websites that link out. Highly recommend allowing the ability to link and creating headings, otherwise its all just the same text and not much possibility to quickly scan a piece of content to see if its relevant. peace Post Date: 06/27/08, Replies: 1 | ||
| Veggie UNfriendly places & products I'm hoping this experience is uncommon, but: Last week in Brownsville we found a diner with gorgeous green signage, menus, etc. where everything was touted as pure + natural. We ordered a couple different soy sandwiches. One bite each and we sensed something was wrong. The waiter lied to my wife, but when I asked to talk to the cook he shrugged and admitted that the soy stuff has a substantial amount of beef, "For flavor." Now, there's no way these guys are going to reprint their expensive menus, so it bothers me to know that we won't be the last folks scammed by these jerks. Don't know how many places like this exist though. Post Date: 06/18/08, Replies: 8 | ||
| Prison Food PETA does it again! Great story! So can we now please have a HappyCow section on where it is best to commit crimes / get arrested? (I am joking Guys). . . . Top 10 Vegetarian-Friendly Prisons! . When we announced our top 10 vegetarian-friendly ballparks, part of the idea was to encourage more people to check out a game or two at those stadiums and sample their vegetarian fare. Same sort of deal with our top 10 colleges—one effect of publicizing their veg-friendly cafeterias was that more people would want to go there. I'm going to go out on a limb and say that if this latest top 10 list gets you all amped about the prospect of going to one of these prisons, you may want to set some slightly more ambitious goals for yourself … but for the people who—through bad luck or poor planning—are on their way there, this will come as some very good news. . We get calls all the time from inmates who want to make a positive change in their lives by going vegetarian, and in the course of responding to these individuals, we've assembled the following list of the top 10 vegetarian-friendly prisons in the United States as a tidbit for curious citizens, a resource for prisoners' rights groups, and, well, a menu for future inmates. Whichever category you fall into, I hope you enjoy it. . Go here to read Newsweek's coverage of the story . www.newsweek.com/id/74327 . , and check out the top 10 below: . | Regional Editors - a very good idea - Eric thank you for your email - yes I fully agree that having an informal / formal group of active Regional Editors will really help to keep the listings on HappyCow more up to date - "chefmoz" have 2,600+ volunteer editors to update / list in their restaurant directory. OK - my offer - until further notice / death / insanity I will work on Hong Kong SAR & Ho Chi Minh City, Viet Nam. For other provinces / areas of Viet Nam I will ask friends around the country to regularly check on the listings in their areas / join HappyCow themselves. Any suggestions from other members on how best to do it will be most welcome - to get started my method is phoning around / visiting the listed places at least twice a year to weed out closed businesses / collect new email addresses & website details / asking them to become "Friends" etc. Other veggie Internet Directories featuring Hong Kong / Viet Nam are almost useless - all the ones that I know of are many years out of date. | Airport Food From - www.HealthNewsDigest.com Airport Food - until reading this today I had never thought about adding Airport restaurants! Now I will start to look out for places to add! ++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++ Food and Nutrition Author: Physicians Committee for Responsible Medicine Last Updated: Dec 11, 2007 - 3:33:18 PM ________________________________________ New Report on Airport Food for Holiday Travelers By Physicians Committee for Responsible Medicine Dec 11, 2007 - 3:20:08 PM Dallas, Chicago, and Detroit Top the List of Healthiest Airports, Survey Shows Washington National and Miami Lag Behind; Las Vegas Is Most Improved (HealthNewsDigest.com) - WASHINGTON — Holiday travelers should have no trouble finding a healthful meal in many of the nation's busiest airports, according to an annual report just released by the Physicians Committee for Responsible Medicine. PCRM nutritionists found that 82 percent of the restaurants surveyed offer at least one low-fat, cholesterol-free vegetarian entrée, making this the second year in a row with such a high score. The survey—now in its seventh year—examined food served at 15 of the busiest airports in the country. However, some airports are much better than others. If you're laying over in Dallas, Chicago, or Detroit, you'll have no trouble finding a healthful meal. If you're traveling through Washington or Miami, you'll have to look harder. "The biggest health issue for travelers is not air safety. It's the cholesterol-laden burgers, fried chicken, and battered fish sticks eaten during layovers that present a much greater long-term threat," says PCRM dietitian Susan Levin, M.S., R.D. More than 90 percent of the restaurants at Dallas, Detroit, and O'Hare airports offer a healthful option. The figure in Miami is 67 percent, and at Washington National is a dismal 42 percent. PCRM dietitians gave each restaurant a point if its menu included at least one low-fat, high-fiber, cholesterol-free vegetarian entrée. The final percentage score was derived by dividing the airport's number of restaurants serving health-conscious fare by its total number of restaurants. Airport Score Healthy Restaurants/Total Restaurants 1. Dallas/Fort Worth International Airport 94% 89/95 2. (tie) Chicago O'Hare International Airport 93% 81/87 2. (tie) Detroit Metropolitan Wayne County Airport 93% 56/60 3. (tie) Los Angeles International Airport 89% 50/56 3. (tie) Newark Liberty International Airport 89% 49/55 4. Denver International Airport 84% 41/49 5. Phoenix Sky Harbor International Airport 82% 46/56 6. Minneapolis-St. Paul International Airport 81% 47/58 7. San Francisco International Airport 77% 46/60 8. John F. Kennedy International Airport 76% 62/82 9. Las Vegas McCarran International Airport 75% 33/44 10. Orlando International Airport 73% 29/40 11. Hartsfield-Jackson Atlanta International Airport 72% 52/72 12. Miami International Airport 67% 31/46 13. | Veggie Friendly Pubs/Restaurants How about including in the guide pubs/restaurants that cater for vegetarians/vegans? Here in the UK purely Veggie eating places can be thin on the ground but, a lot of places offer decent veggie/vegan options. Just a thought. Dave Post Date: 12/11/07, Replies: 7 | ||
| Blogging - traveling Africa plus, plus Guys - as you blog your travels please add HappyCow mentions whenever it is appropriate to - so that many more "bod's" know about HappyCow & start to add great eating places - there are still big holes in the site which can be quickly filled. I have a request today from a vegan friend who is heading for Sierra Leone, West Africa in December to do voluntary work for a year - I could find no single place to recommend to her. Not even a Seventh Day Adventist place. For the past couple of months I have been having fun listing / updating all of my favorite Hong Kong eating places - revisiting a few cafes which I last went to in the 80's. I estimate that there are still 30+ just in Hong Kong which can be included. Post Date: 12/01/07, Replies: 2 | ||
| 10,000th Review This morning when choosing where to go for dinner tonight I noticed that 10,009 reviews were already posted. That makes me happy! Post Date: 11/27/07, Replies: 7 | ||
| Hong Kong Suggestion 1 - have Hong Kong as a sub-category of Asia - it takes some intense lateral thinking to find it by first going through China. Hong Kong can be given its officla current name of Hong Kong SAR - this strategy is good until 2047. Next suggestion - split Hong Kong into 3 areas - 1) Hong Kong Island 2) Kowloon 3) New Territories. This will make navigation of HappyCow much easier. Involve me in this. I believe that there are 70+ veggy restaurants in Hong Kong - many of which will opt for FRIEND / paid listings if they see more business coming from their listing. | please use the update facility. hi, i don't know about everyone else, but before a trip i print the the front pages of each place i am visiting from the website. often i struggle to find somewhere, and when i do i update the details on happy cow. can everyone do the same please, as it will make all our lives easier. people often put details on their review, however this will not be updated to the front page and unless you have access to the web, it makes it difficult to find. | "New" labels for cities Hello, I hope this hasn't already been mentioned, but I didn't see it. I was wondering if it was possible to put a "New" label on the cities where new restaurants have recently been added. I always keep coming back to the same cities to check for new additions and it would just make it a lot easier if it was labeled so I wouldn't have to click on each city if there's nothing new...Hope that makes sense... Thanks for everything you do!! You're awesome!!] ~Zira Post Date: 08/08/07, Replies: 2 | ||
| Suggestion on Search Function I just wanted to suggest having a members search function by location. Unless there is, and I haven't found it yet. o.O Post Date: 06/25/07, Replies: 2 | ||
| Shopping lists Some countries have sites listing vegan-friendly products available in the shops eg. isitvegan.info in the UK and Peta in the USA. A link from each country page to these would be very useful. Post Date: 06/25/07, Replies: 2 | ||
| For good race relations See this page - www.happycow.net/north_america/index.html - I suggest that we have a dedicated section for "Central America & Mexico" - I had to twist my grey head walnut 3 times around to find El Salvador - it never crossed my mind to look in North America - from "Gringo in Viet Nam" Post Date: 06/24/07, Replies: 2 | ||
| Mapping Places It would be very useful to be able to get up maps to restaurants, hotels etc. and to have them alongside the other information so it can all be printed off together. It would also be great to have maps or other ways of grouping together restaurants that are nearby each other/in the same section of town. Country maps would also be useful showing the towns with places listed on the site. Post Date: 06/20/07, Replies: 1 |
