And ... you might have better chances if you joined the Norwegian army (but I guess that is not so easy and maybe not your interest :-)

Wow - interesting. No judgement, but I wonder at the discrepancy from a vegetarian based diet and joining a killing force. Of course - I suppose I can't assume you are veg for ethical reasons.
But - in response to your question, I was hitchhiking thru the Mojave once and was picked up by a Marine on his way back to base. We started chatting, as you do with hitchhike drivers, and my veganism came up. I was surprised to learn that there were actually a couple of guys in his unit who were vegetarian, and he said that they didn't get any more razzing than anyone else (it's a culture of messing with each other for any "abnormal" views or quirks). He also told me that there were quite a few vegetarian options for MRE's (Meals Ready to Eat - the Military in field food). But, alas, he also pointed out that he had never heard of or seen a Vegan MRE, and didn't know if it would really be possible to be Vegan in the US Military.
- Anyhoo - good luck if you join. But - might I suggest the Peace Corps instead?
Cheers
