• good burger and GREAT Lebkuchen (gingerbread)

I planned a visit to JO Johannis on my day-trip to Nuremberg from the moment I saw on their Facebook page that they made vegan Lebkuchen (Christmas gingerbread). Lebkuchen at Christmastime is one of my favourite memories from childhood, but I usually feel left out at Christmas markets because I can no longer eat traditional (non-vegan) Lebkuchen. The Lebkuchen was so delicious that I had to buy some extra to take away so I could continue to enjoy them for a few more days. My dinner companion and I shared a burger (that's on the regular menu) and a pasta bolognese that was part of the weekly menu. The burger was especially good with its vegan bacon and special sauce . . . and definitely filling. I also enjoyed the pasta. It was hearty and simple. JO Johannis also makes their own iced-tea. We had one mango and one passionfruit . . . both refreshing and not too sweet. The atmosphere is comfortable and sitting down for food in the late afternoon was a nice break from walking around Nuremberg. (JO Johannis is only a short walk from the Kaiserburg and the Albrecht Dürer House.) The service was a bit reserved but I find this quite common in Germany (where servers tend to leave you alone to enjoy your food and dinner companions).
