  • Hidden vegan treasure! (ask vegan, 100% vegetarian)

As we walked by the Nopparatara beach, trying to get ourselves ready to fight out a vegan meal somewhere (not easy in Thailand, as they but fish paste and oyster sauce + msg in all sorts ov vegetarian dishes) - we looked at the menu in the street for this place - Cuckoo´s nest. We liked the name and saw that there were clear listings of dishes that were vegetarian. We notices that there were ingredients as when the dish had eggs in it it was marked, so we thought that perhaps the people behind the place intended to be clear of the ingredients list. We stumbled for a second as this was pretty much the first place that did not have a host in front trying to get you in and we stumbled in... We were welcomed by smiling vibrant woman who, when asked, lit up when we asked vegan. She said that yes, she knows what it is and that they like to cook vegan over everything, but as they need to make a living, they have to serve other dishes. We had springrolls (best that I ever had), kung fu tofu salad (so good), tofu wrap (needed little bit more sauce but still awesome), green curry (spicy, good), teriyaki tofu ( need improvement), and one more authentic thai dish that tasted good, but strange for a westener (certainly an unforgettable experience)! The feel is laid back, but everything works and hopefully they will have a completely vegan place one day! Good luck! Also, they have a breakfast menu, where dishes can be adjusted to fit vegan diet, so get your buns there and communicate!
