- Oh the alcoholic afternoons
Very nice setting on Newcaste's Quayside right next to the law courts and a stone's throw from the Gateshead Millennium Bridge. Came across it by chance on the way to a gig at The Sage recently and popped in to watch the football and have a beer. A lot of money has been spent on the interior, I was most impressed. Head of Steams around the North of England are all generally inviting, quirky and appealing. This is no exception. Had a quick look at the food menu and I'm quite intrigued by the vegetarian breakfast which can be made as vegan if requested. They have a massive range of vegan beers on draft and in bottles many of which are clearly labelled as such. If you're after a quick snack or light bite then the spinach, chickpea and aubergine massala or chargrilled vegetable sandwich are the vegan options . The chunky fries here are always a winner too. If you want a more specialist vegan pub experience I would suggest the Ship Inn in Ouseburn which is within walking distance. The Head of Steam is definitely somewhere I could happily spend the evening over a few quality beers. As ever, most places on Newcastle Quayside become packed at weekends. We actually had to leave this place on a Saturday nignt because it was so busy at the bar and couldn't be bothered to wait to get served by the young but friendly staff who hadn't quite perfected the art of prioritisation. Obviously, these things take time.
