  • On Balance, Taipei's Best Western Food Restaurant

I wrote the first review for Tofunia a year and a half ago, saying that it was good but its address was wrong, so now that its address has long been corrected, I've eaten there many times, and it's found its niche in the crowded Taipei vegan restaurant scene, as a Happycow ambassador for Taipei I thought it was time to update my review. Tofunia offers a great range of authentic Western favourites and comfort foods which are difficult to find - and otherwise very expensive - in Taipei. Staff are friendly and helpful, the two-story interior is very pleasant, its location is very convenient (one stop on the MRT from Taipei 101, and also walk-able from the blue line) and prices are surprisingly low. I especially like their burgers and pizzas, which in my opinion are the best in Taipei (especially the pizzas). As a long-time resident who has eaten at all vegan restaurants in Taipei and around countless times, Tofunia is my favourite restaurant in Taipei owing to the *balance* of all the factors above. Food is healthier at Plants (raw food), the dining atmosphere is nicer at Mianto (botique restaurant), at there is a more creative fusion of cuisine styles at Blossom Rena (French / Taiwanese fusion), and I enjoy visiting all these restaurants (and more) but they are all more expensive. But when I just want a meal in Taipei, and I'm in the area, Tofunia is my first choice. So I recommend it especially to residents and travelers missing tastes from home who want a good meal for a good price. Another interesting niche of Tofunia is that it's a great place to take non-vegans to show them that vegans can eat 'normal' food. For a serious foodie, to show them the best of vegan fusion food I would probably take them to Blossom Rena, or perhaps Flourish. But sometimes it's nice to show a non-vegan that vegans can enjoy all the same favourites (burgers, pizzas, quisaillas, desserts) as everyone else, without paying a fortune or having to trek across town, and Tofunia is perfect for that. I also like the creative vegan artwork on the walls, which is positive and non-threatening in its messages, so is very welcoming to non-vegans. Updated from previous review on 2016-10-15
