  • Lovely for a fancy meal and/or special diets

Hawa is the restaurant at the Tambo del Inka, an independently-owned hotel/resort in Urubamba run by excellent chefs who clearly take an active interest in health and sustainability. The first page of the menu is dedicated to organic dishes (and the entire menu uses at least 20% organic ingredients, they say), and there's also a dedicated page for gluten-free options (and the breakfast buffet has a gluten-free table, where even the toaster is reserved only for gluten-free bread, to avoid contamination). While the majority of the menu items contain animal products of some kind, there are a few vegan dishes (e.g. the Peruvian quinoa salad, et al.) and the chefs are happy to accommodate requests to prepare other dishes vegan when possible. The quality is very high (both food and service), but the portions are small, so if you're hungry after a Machu Picchu trek you'll need a few dishes to fill up — and the bill will rise accordingly. But if you're looking for fine dining and/or a place that you can count on to take special care to understand your particular dietary needs and prepare a great meal accordingly, then Hawa is your best bet in Urubamba. (Can't imagine a better place for a date, either.) The atmosphere is very warm, and comfortably elegant. One of the owners of the hotel is the architect who designed it, and clearly much care and imagination went into the design of the space. Enjoy!
