- Good option for vegans in Calistoga
My spouse and I just spent the weekend in Calistoga, which is definitely a challenging place to be vegan. I was thrilled to find Checkers, which doesn't look much more vegan-friendly than the next place (even the salads have animal products in them), but when I went in and spoke with the waitress she and the staff were very happy to accommodate us. We ordered the bruschetta without cheese, the greek salad without cheese, and the penne broccoli. The bruschetta was absolutely fantastic -- among the best we've ever had. The salad was good and a decent size. The pasta was also good and quite filling. They also brought foccacia to the table with oil and vinegar to start. This was by far the best meal we found during our stay, even better than the dinner we had at Farmstead in St.Helena (they also were happy to modify their food for vegans, but sadly much of the flavor was lost in the process).
