kupu was recommended to me by a friend from my days as an exchange student in rural yamaguchi. i stopped by for lunch during a day trip to shunan city and had their genmai (brown rice) curry which came with an assortment of veggies, some pickled lotus root/carrot/onion, and a salad with a mustardy dressing. the curry sauce itself was a fusion of indian daal and the typical sweeter, stew-like japanese curry, which was satisfying in a warming, stick to your ribs kind of way. i returned the same day for a cup of chai and a slice of their carrot cake, which was just as amazing (albeit a little dry). kupu is easy to miss as it is on the first floor of a very, very small building by pia/ginza mall right outside tokuyama station, but it's absolutely worth a visit, and its location makes it a great choice for anyone who happens to be passing through yamaguchi. lovely interior, lovely staff, lovely food.
