  • Nasty service/Nice food

I went to this restaurant throughout my childhood and have many very fond memories there. This is why it was such a shame that my impression of the Great Anerican Health Bar was ruined when I returned there recently. It was a wet and miserable night and my wife and I had walked some distance to get there. On the way my wife began to cramp, when we got there she was noticeably in pain. The waiter said to us that he was sorry but there was no table yet. So we could EITHER eat at the bar OR wait for a table. I said we would wait for a table but noticing many empty seats around the bar I mentioned "okay, my wifes just going to sit down at the bar for a few until the table's ready" at this point the manager screamed at me "NO! theres no sitting at the bar unless you are eating there" in an extremely nasty tone, to which i replied "we just walked 2 @$@%!@ miles to get here, my wife is sitting down". The food we ordered that night was well above average. The fettucine, had great content and a pleasant alfredo sauce. The chili quesadilla was also quite tasty and the rest of my companions seemed more than content with the dishes they ordered. The food here generally exceed expectations, while it is not quite the highest level of gourmet, they always make more out of a dish than you expect with great content and a fine selection of ingredients. My issues are firstly, because of their location, being one of the only kosher vegetarian options in that part of midtown, they are able to take advantage of their clientele pricewise. While I dont think it's grossly overpriced, it could easily be brought down a dollar or two per main dish. Secondly, when you see someone in obvious pain denying them to sit down, when their are seats availabe, is minimum nasty and maximum sick and masochistic. Putting that aside, the service is fairly quick and efficient, the restaurant has a good vibrant upscale kosher diner charm to it, and the food can be excellent. I would recommend this place with reservations and just hope that you have a better experience there than I did.
