- Decent, not great
I am eating my way through Tokyo's vegan and vegetarian establishments. I am underwhelmed so far and unfortunately, this place was no exception. I liked the colorful interior, friendly English-speaking staff and menu. The waitress was a bit surprised that I ordered two main dishes. But given the serving sizes, I think this was the right call. I had soy meat on brown rice and the avocado burger. The first dish was served layered so that all the soy meat was on top, followed by greens and finally rice. The bowl was so tall and narrow that I found no way to mix the ingredients or get to the rice before eating half the soy meat. The nuggets were deep-fried and rather soggy. The greens (spring onions I think) were nice, fresh and spicy - as far as I can tell, that was pretty much the only flavor in the dish. The burger was stacked impractically tall, but I did not mind that one bit. Part of the fun of eating a burger is making a mess :). The patty looked, felt and tasted like a deep-fried chunk of tofu. It was completely bland, as if it had not been marinated or spiced in any way. There was a good amount of vegetables (again, very fresh) and a sauce that did not taste like much. I have eaten some truly fantastic vegan burgers. The one I got here was far from that benchmark.
