  • Disappointment

In my three dinnertime visits to this Beyond Veggie during a two-month period I never saw a single customer, even though nearby eateries were busy. In fact, a vegetarian stall nearby is overloaded. What's going on? It could be the prices on the menu: items are about double the price charged by neighbors. Yet the eatery's ambience is nothing special, no different than a KFC. The service was the worst I've seen in this part of the world: once the server literally tossed the menu on the table, with eyes glued to the cellphone. It did not seem intentionally rude, only that she simply was not accustomed to serving an actual customer. Given the price, the appearance of the dishes was rather lackluster (see photos) - none of the ornamental flourish that's usually given to a restaurant meal. Finally, the taste was problematic. Although the soup base for both the assam laksa and curry were delicious, the vegetables were bland. They obviously were not stewed in the soup base, only added at the last minute. On my last visit I discovered a separate set dish (bento) menu that was never given to me. These meals are a slightly better value for the solo diner. Portions are skimpy, but it offers samples of their soups and sweets. The dessert seemed to be the signature item of this place. Any place offering vegetarian meals with an emphasis on healthy eating is a place I really want to like. Unfortunately, this Beyond Veggie was a big disappointment.
