- Bong Sung Vegetarian Food, Ho Chi Minh City
This establishment is easy to find. Its 1 floor above ground level. It is well signed from the street and the access from the side of the building (up a narrow passageway) is also pretty straight forward. Its quite a big restaurant. There's 2 dining areas inside and tables in 3 sections on the balcony. The waiter very usefully for spoke good English. Thus my 10 word Viet vocab was not a constraint to be concerned with. I asked the waiter to recommend the food. For a starter I had rolled Pho. This tasted very nice with the accompanying dip. Also it was pretty substantial for a starter (6 rolls). For a main I was recommended to have a dish that containing jackfruit. not something I recall encountering before. The food was great, the decor clean and pleasant, the service was efficient. I was snapping away taking pics to load up to this website. The waiter made it clear that for reasons unbeknown to me, I was not to take any pics of the bar nor the kitchen. The tab came to 203 000 dong. This included a 5% service charge. While this is pricier than other places I recall so far in HCMC, I don't believe most people holidaying in Vietnam would find that outrageous, especially for the quality of the food. I was still happy with what I was getting for my dong. One small area that the manager could perhaps address. The music being played didn't seem to to match the vibe of the place. Fair enough the placing is peaceful and relaxing. The music being played though reminded of the tv adverts from my youth for an album by Richard Clayderman. It was piano versions of songs most of which I recognised (e.g. The Carpenters). While not to my taste personally it was inoffensive enough. It did though seem to be a mismatch to the establishment. It was more the kind of music I'd expect to hear in the lobby of a corporate standard hotel on a business trip.
