- Vegan-friendly menu, spacious new location
Kaia Shenai is a classic backpacker joint (right down to the Bob Marley tapestry) in the best sense of the term, with health-consciousness being front-and-center. Though not a vegetarian restaurant*, Kaia Shenai's menu includes plenty of lacto-veg and vegan options, which are clearly marked on the menu with icons. (Note for vegans: there is actually a dairy-free icon, but honey is not specifically addressed on the menu, so be sure to check with your server). I tried most of the vegan (or veganizable) dishes, and my favorite was the "Tex-Mex wrap," which I ordered with the added-cost option of blue corn tortillas instead of wheat. The flavor is as great as the color (see my photo). The corn tortillas are a bit fragile, so eating with hands can be a deliciously messy affair, but there's always a fork there for backup if you need it. Service is friendly and casual, and some of the servers speak English. Enjoy! *If you're looking for a purely veg restaurant, try Amores Brujos, on the south side of Plaza de Armas (the main square), a few blocks away.
