- sooo vegi - wanchai
*update as of 15 feb 2017 visited the wanchai branch for a weekday lunch after 2.30 pm. the service staff (possibly boss?) was very helpful when it came to pinpointing which dishes didn't contain eggs/dairy, though it would have been much simpler (esp for non-cantonese speaking diners) if they had just labelled their menu. i arrived slightly after 2.30 and had their teatime deal: $38 salad (mesclun, cucumber, shredded carrot, cherry tomato, with oil and vinegar) and a hot drink (a teabag of dates and other stuff). i would have preferred one of their rice/mock meat dishes - $48+, but i decided against that as i felt it was overpriced, lacked veggies, and didn't come with any tea time special. as per my previous comments when it was at fortress hill, it's the sort of place i'd go to if i'm too lazy to cook (or in this case, chop). the very simple rice/pasta dishes are overpriced, imho. if you're in wanchai during lunch hour, you can get a much more filling and varied meal for around the same price at happy veggies, lisa veggie and green veggie. *** a tiny, bright and cosy glasshouse in fortress hill, at the junction of shell street and merlin street, this neighbourhood joint offers a huge blackboard of dishes, which might take a while to decipher and decide (english menu available on paper, though it omits the teatime menu). as i wasn't that hungry, i took away a mexican wrap (hkd32) for dinner this evening, which contained lettuce/greens, chopped onions, "minced meat", a few beans, a little avocado (i had to use my imagination for that). the dressing was pretty nice and not too salty, though one wrap probably wouldn't be enough if you're a bigger eater. wish they would be more generous and pack more into it. other dishes i've previously ordered include: purple cabbage with rice, spaghetti with mixed vegetables, stir-fried string beans with rice. on the whole i'd describe what i've tried so far as not terrible, not fantastic, nothing to rave about. kind of like a much lighter, cleaner, vegetarian version of "chaa chaan teng" food (without the "wok hei") or something you might be able to whip up in a hostel or at home if only you weren't too lazy. they also have other stuff such as sushi platter, potato curry, all day breakfast, which i haven't yet had the opportunity of tasting. wouldn't recommend the laksa (hkd45), which was unauthentic and which gravy was diluted and tasted like sweet+salty curried water.
