- Kanlaya Vegetarian, Chiang Mai
I spun up here on Saturday evening looking forward to eating here based on the consistently high reviews on this website. It was thus something of a surprise to see an insert on each page of the menu stating, 'chicken, beef, pork, fish and sea food' are also available. There are no dishes as such specifically listed on the menu that are non chicken. My co-diner asked the lady who served us what the story was with the insert. The lady was clearly slightly uncomfortable when she answered that basically she has had to make this change to try to stay in business. There's certainly a lot of competition for the vego market in Chiang Mai and indeed very close to this restaurant. It's not on the busiest of roads and Blue Diamond is just along the street which while predominantly but not exclusively vegetarian, seems to be doing a roaring business with the extended target clientele. Anyway a couple of dishes were ordered and shared. Both were very nice as was service. There's a couple of tables outside which allow a leisurely view of a nice Chiang Mai street. Something that seemed slightly out of synch to me was the music being played didn't seem to fit with the vibe of the restaurant (contemporary western chart music like Rhianna and Jessie J). Maybe it's just me as I went another all vego place close by the next day and they were playing chart dance music. I would undoubtedly have rated this place higher if it was 100% vego.
