- Sandwich advertised and labeled as vegan not vegan
We came here for lunch after reviewing the menu on line where we found the following description for their Smokey Beet Rueben: "roasted beets, sauerkraut, housemade 1000 Island with veganaise, and swiss cheese on sprouted rye (VEGAN)". Once in the store, we confirmed on the menu board that the sandwich was vegan because the several sandwiches that were vegan were denoted with a big pink V (a legend was provided that showed that the V's were vegan, the GF were gluten-free, etc). I also noticed a Southwestern wrap on the menu which said it was made with cashew cheese but since this one did not have the big pink V by it, I confirmed at the counter that the entire wrap was actually vegan (it also had a sauce on it made with veganaise) so we ordered that in addition to the Rueben labeled as vegan. My boyfriend and I shared the two as we normally do. I finished my half of the Rueben before my boyfriend started into his half. When he did, he noticed that the consistency of the cheese was very, well, cheesy so he asked what kind of cheese they used and they told us it was Chao. He took another bite of just the cheese and was still concerned and asked again. This time we were told that it was actually real swiss cheese and that they were very sorry but if we had wanted it to be vegan, we had to order it vegan (even though the online menu advertises it as vegan and the menu board at the store said it was vegan). I ended up getting really sick. My boyfriend told them they needed to take the V off of the menu that indicated it was vegan but they argued that below that it said vegan cheese available and it sounded like they wouldn't be changing anything. I'd like to give the store a high rating for other reasons but because of this bait and switch and their refusal to address the issue, I cannot. If you are a strict vegan and/or cannot tolerate dairy, please be very careful here.
