  • Really disappointing...

Slate's has a strong reputation as an up-scale hippie bistro, and I remember delicious food from a visit or two years ago before I was a vegetarian. Thus, I was really disappointed by our recent dinner there. To start I was almost shocked by the lack of vegetarian offerings, considering Slate's "hippie" roots. Out of 16 entrees, only two were vegetarian: Cashew tofu over rice (yawn for something one can easily make at home especially at the price point of $18!) and Fresh Tomato & Basil Fettucini. We tried the fettucini. It was tepid with a scattering of uninspired tomato cubes and some scraps of basil. Has anyone from the kitchen actually tried that recently?! We were excited that the stuffed mushroom cap special was vegetarian that night, only to be disappointed by lack of flavor and, that's right, a single mushroom cap. The Grilled Eggplant Rollatini was, again, a single piece, of crunchy undercooked eggplant. Yuck! After a gloriously succulent, melt-in-your mouth eggplant rollatini at Aurora Provisions in Portland recently, that rollatini was especially heart breaking. Not only was our visit uninspiring, it was border-line terrible, and definitely felt like a ripoff for the price. Next time we're in Hallowell we'll go to Thai food or have a home-made veggie burger or sweet potato fries and salad at the Liberal Cup!
